Leveraged loan wrap: Investors gain upper hand as market sentiment sours

The US leveraged loan asset class limped through May, posting its worst return in eight months—as would-be borrowers increasingly accepted price hikes and tighter terms to complete new deals.

The sour mood is evident in the overall size of the asset class, which dipped below $1.4 trillion for the first time since March 2022, according to LCD's monthly Leveraged Loan Market Wrap. Retail investors continue to retreat from the segment.

LCD's analysis also covers the Morningstar LSTA Loan Index, yields for riskier single-B issuers and the leveraged loan maturity wall.

Calpers ups VC allocation after 'lost decade'

America's largest public pension scheme, Calpers, is leaning into venture—even as many other LPs lean away.

After years of bringing down its VC exposure to a 1% target, the institutional investor is now looking to increase its allocation to venture by more than sixfold, from $800 million to $5 billion, the Financial Times reported.

The pension manager suffered a "lost decade" coinciding with the venture boom, according to a new review of the program by managing investment director Anton Orlich.

Percepto, which offers autonomous inspection and monitoring tools for infrastructure, has raised $67 million in debt and equity in a Series C led by Koch Disruptive Technologies.

Cloud cost management startup CloudZero has raised a $32 million Series B led by Innovius Capital and Threshold Ventures.

Paris-based DJust, which offers a B2B ecommerce platform, has raised a €12 million Series A led by NEA.

At-home fertility testing startup Oova has raised $10.3 million in a Series A led by Spero Ventures, TechCrunch reported.

Dutch climate-tech startup Ecochain has secured €3 million in a round led by Phase2.earth.

Pyrra Technologies, an online threat-detection startup, has raised a $2.3 million seed round led by Ducera Investments.

Nasdaq has agreed to purchase Adenza, a financial software provider, for $10.5 billion from Thoma Bravo. Thoma Bravo will maintain a 14.9% stake and a seat on the board.

ACG Acquisition is buying a nickel and a copper mine in Brazil from Appian Capital Advisory in a $1 billion SPAC deal backed by VW and Glencore.

KKR has raised its bid for Telecom Italia's landline network by over €2 billion, valuing the company at up to €23 billion, Reuters reported.

Italy's top-flight soccer league Serie A is in talks with PE firms over its media rights, the Financial Times reported.

Horizon Capital-backed UK IT services provider Modern Networks has acquired its sector peer Bluegrass Group.

Levine Leichtman is to invest in Cleversoft, a German company offering regulatory software for financial services.

LDC has exited its investment in UK-based marketing company MSG to One Equity Partners.

Livingbridge has exited its investment in London-based travel company Direct Ferries via its 2012 vintage fund, Livingbridge 5. The transaction includes a follow-on investment alongside new investor ICG.
 
Corporate M&A  
UBS has completed its takeover of beleaguered Swiss bank Credit Suisse, creating a combined bank with $1.6 trillion on its balance sheet.

Swiss pharma giant Novartis has agreed to acquire US-based biotech firm Chinook Therapeutics for $3.2 billion.

"The number of funds raised by PRI (Principles for Responsible Investment) signatories did slow in 2022, with 414 closed, a 32.7% drop from the previous year. ... The fundraising drop for PRI signatory funds was also proportionally smaller than that of non-signatory funds, which experienced a 42.2% drop."
