“3.13 seconds”

How long it took one man to solve a Rubik’s Cube, setting a new world record. Anything but a square.

Social Media News

The Story

On some platforms, influencers are outranking journalists for news.

Explain.

Mainstream journalists are still driving news convos on legacy social media sites, like Twitter and Facebook, according to a new report. But it’s a different story on younger-skewing platforms, like Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok (which, surprise surprise, is the fastest-growing network). There, influencers, celebrities, and personalities are stitching together news content.

That doesn’t seem great.

We’ll find out. For years, there’s been notification after notification about the spread of misinformation and disinformation on social media, especially around elections. After being in the ring light, err, spotlight, many said they’d try to ’do better.’ That might explain why some say misinformation had less of an impact in 2022 than in 2020. But there’s still reason to worry: Some sites have since scaled back those efforts. Not to mention, Gen Z is the fastest-growing part of the electorate. Plus, apps like TikTok have a bad track record outside of politics. See: Berberine, tart cherry juice, and all the other misinformed health tricks, tips, and trends that have gotten the mini mic. At a time when Americans have apparently become even less confident in science.

Social media users often rely on influencers for what to buy and try. Now, they’re apparently using TikTok as a dupe for mainstream news outlets.

What's Happening

📰 In news…

Secretary of State Antony Blinken kicked off a long-delayed series of meetings in Beijing. TBD if those will include Chinese President Xi Jinping. Back at home, more than three years after George Floyd’s murder, the Justice Dept released a scathing report on the systemic abuses and discrimination by the Minneapolis Police Department. That comes as the DOJ is apparently putt-ing in a review of the PGA-LIV partnership.

📈 In business…

While UPS and the Teamsters union have tentatively agreed to give drivers much-needed relief (aka, AC), the route to a final contract still has some big bumps. Particularly if it isn’t reached by August. Meanwhile, after being in hot water, the maker of Instant Pot filed for bankruptcy. And Cava took office lunches public.

🩺 In health…

A new documentary will spotlight endometriosis — and the ways in which the US healthcare system fails women. Also, a new survey found that many insured adults struggle to access mental health services. Yet an overwhelming majority still say their coverage is “good” or “excellent.” (We’re confused too.) Oh and a toilet plunger is reportedly the key to improving CPR.
