Sports Uniforms and Dress Codes

The Story

Tomorrow, Wimbledon begins — and it’s likely to serve up some new looks.

What do you mean?

For the first time in recent history, the world’s oldest tennis tournament is relaxing its Victorian-era, all-white dress code — which includes headbands, wristbands, even medical tape “if possible.” Now, female players will be allowed to wear dark-colored undershorts beneath their skirts or shorts. The change, which was first announced in November, is intended to relieve ”a potential source of anxiety,” so athletes can focus solely on their performance. It comes after players opened up about the stress of having to wear all-white ensembles while on their period and after protests at last year’s Grand Slam.

About bloody time.

You said it. And Wimbledon isn’t the only game changer: Last year, England’s Manchester City Women announced it had punted white shorts from its kit. In February, the Orlando Pride became the first team in the National Women’s Soccer League to do the same. And since then, the Ireland women’s rugby team and the women’s national soccer teams of England and New Zealand have all made similar moves. Not to mention that later this month, at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, nearly all of the 13 national teams partnered with Nike will have kits featuring colored shorts that have proprietary technology to prevent period leaks. Important, since studies have shown girls drop out of sports at alarming rates around puberty — with, surprise, surprise, periods being a key reason why.

Sports teams and competitions are raising a red flag over white shorts. That’s a big win for women’s sports. Period.

Weekend Escape

Huddle up, sports fans. Over the next two weeks, hundreds of thousands of tennis lovers will flock to London’s All England Lawn Tennis Club to attend Wimbledon. (If you’re planning to watch, keep an eye out for defending champs Elena Rybakina and Novak Djokovic.) But it’s not the only major sports event worth traveling for. If you’re game, consider planning a trip around...

  • 2023 MLB All-Star Game. Seattle, WA. July 11. When the American League steps up to the plate at T-Mobile Park, it’ll try to take home its 10th consecutive win over the National League. Ahead of the big game, there’ll be plenty of other festivities, including the All-Star Celebrity Softball Game and the Home Run Derby.

  • 2023 WNBA All-Star Game. Las Vegas, NV. July 15. The WNBA playoffs are around the corner (mark your cal for Sept 13). But first, the league’s top players will shoot their shots at Michelob ULTRA Arena, led by team captains A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart.

  • 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Australia and New Zealand. July 20-Aug 20. The two-time defending champ USWNT hopes to become the first team — male or female — to win three World Cups in a row. As of now, the odds are in its favor.

  • US Open Tennis. Queens, NY. Aug 28-Sept 10. While Wimbledon may provide some hints as to how this tournament will play out, some have already predicted that Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek will defend their titles at the final Grand Slam of 2023.

  • Ryder Cup. Italy. Sept 29-Oct 1. The biennial head-to-head between the US and Europe is always worth the drive, err, flight for golf fans. Particularly this year, as Team USA tries to repeat its hard-won title.

  • Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix. Las Vegas, NV. Nov 19. You could go to the US Grand Prix in Austin, TX on Oct 22. Or, you could go to Sin City for ”F1’s most-anticipated event” of the year, where fan faves like Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris will race on the iconic Strip.
