In the name of dishwasher testing, we coated glass tumblers with tomato juice, left syrupy sweet wine in wine glasses overnight, and swabbed stemware with red lipstick. We dirtied utensils, spatulas, ladles, and a garlic press. It was an enlightening—and gross—process that helped us find the best dishwashers.

We also became total pros in getting the most out of them. Here are some of our best tips:

• Don’t bother prerinsing. Seriously! Every dishwasher company, detergent company, and independent expert we’ve talked to says that it’s unnecessary.
• Use a rinse aid. It reduces chalky water spots and hazy films, and also helps dishes dry more completely.
• The right detergent makes a difference. Using a good detergent can punch up the power of even a mediocre dishwasher.
