MegaMaker - What I learned about you

hey, here's a few thoughts from today

Thanks to everyone who replied to last week's email. I believe I got 63 responses, and while I couldn't respond to every email, I read all of them.

When I asked, "What's your primary interest in this newsletter?" many of the responses landed in these buckets:

"I want to bootstrap my own startup"

Many of you are here because you want to build (or are building) your own indie business. Many of you are interested in SaaS specifically. Two quotes:

  • "My primary interest in the newsletter is learning how to build a lifestyle business that fits my needs. I want to bootstrap something that I own 100%."
  • "I want to work on creative projects, encourage others, and make a great living while maximizing my time actually living."

"Looking for inspiration and motivation"

Several of you mentioned that you've enjoyed hearing about my personal journey and the stories I share about Transistor. A common refrain was, "I was a software engineer back then. And your podcast (Product People, MegaMaker, Build your SaaS) motivated me to become a founder." Folks also mentioned that they wanted to hear about both the challenges (what was hard) and successes (what worked).

"I want to build a calm company like you."

I was surprised by how often the word "calm" came up. There's definitely a desire to maintain a balanced, happy, and healthy life while building a business. A handful of you mentioned that you're currently an owner or an employee in a "non-calm" business, and you're looking for something better.

"I want to hear about your ideas and perspectives."

Several subscribers wanted to keep hearing about my thoughts on work, business, tech, ethics, and social issues.

All of this was really helpful. Thank you. ๐Ÿ™

I'll use all of this feedback to inform the stuff I write about going forward. ๐Ÿ‘

Cheers,
Justin Jackson

PS: In October, I am speaking at this Full Stack conference on "How I would build an indie software company in 2023." I would โค๏ธ it if you came, heard me speak, and hung out after!
