What The Elle - 🛼 This Barbie is an Investor

BARBIE’S WORLD

No spoilers (or surprises) ahead

This Barbie is a box office record breaker. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie made back its production costs and then some with a $155 million opening weekend, becoming the biggest North American opening for a movie directed by a woman and the biggest debut for a comedic film. Ever.

Color us pink … and unsurprised. While considering its robust brand legacy and the sheer marketing dollars that went into promoting the film, we already know that women-led films are one of the best investments Hollywood can make. The basic facts show that investing in women works, over and over again.

But let’s also talk about the “Barbenheimer” of it all. Universal Studios originally predicted Oppenheimer would nab $40 million at its debut. But, thanks to the Barbenheimer phenomenon, Oppenheimer doubled its projected earnings, to the tune of $80 million. That’s a big win for Kens.

Here’s what we take away from this: When women win, we all win. Uncoincidentally, that was also a lesson from the Barbie movie plot. Ken may be Kenough, but he’d be nowhere without Barbie.

How Barbie navigated over 250 careers

Luckily, you probably won’t have to change careers more than once or twice in your lifetime. But even Barbie could use a financial planner to help her with those big life changes. (Fun fact: It's one of the few job titles she's never had.)

Here are some things to keep in mind while you switch career paths, from our financial planners:

  1. Gauge the health of your emergency fund. You want it to be healthy and full during this time to prepare for moments of loss of income. You may want to tack on a couple extra months of income. Book 30 minutes with a CFP® pro to assess your emergency savings.

  2. Evaluate your budget. Are you going to have to initially take a pay cut as you enter your new career? Adjust your budget so it’s aligned with your new salary expectations. Book a 1:1 budgeting session.

  3. Check in on your retirement plan. Depending on the industry and income, it could affect how you save for retirement and how much you should contribute to your 401(k).

(FYI, Ellevest client discounts for all of these sessions are applied at checkout!)
