One week left: Submit your manuscript to the 2024 First Book Award

The deadline for submitting to the 2024 Academy of American Poets First Book Award, judged by Victoria Chang, is September 1, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. Established in 1975, the Academy of American Poets First Book Award is designed to encourage the work of emerging poets and enable the publication of a poet’s first book.

To review the eligibility requirements and official guidelines, and to submit to the 2024 First Book Award, visit: https://poets.org/academy-american-poets/prizes/first-book-award.

The winner of the 2024 First Book Award will receive $5,000 and their manuscript will be published by Graywolf Press in 2025. In addition, the Academy of American Poets will purchase and send thousands of copies of the book to its members, which will make it one of the most widely distributed poetry books of the year. The winner will also receive a six-week, all-expenses-paid residency at Civitella Ranieri in Umbria, Italy, and will be featured in both American Poets magazine and on Poets.org, which reaches millions of readers each year.
