Lee Moves Toward the Caribbean
|
Tropical Storm Lee became the fourth hurricane of the year yesterday, strengthening into a Category 4 storm as it moved across the open Atlantic Ocean near the northeast Caribbean. Forecasts suggest it may continue to intensify, likely reaching Category 5 status today, with winds above 160 mph. Whether (or where) the system will make landfall remains unclear.
Lee's current trajectory (see here) has it passing north of the Lesser Antilles and Puerto Rico, though the region is expected to see tropical storm-like conditions through the weekend. The system is currently tracking toward the southeastern US coast; however, most models predict the storm will turn and head northward. The timing of Lee's pivot northward will determine to what degree it impacts—or makes landfall—along the US East Coast or Canada sometime during the second half of next week. Only four storms have made landfall as Category 5 hurricanes in US history.
Experts say record warm waters fueled a process known as rapid intensification, where maximum sustained wind speeds increase by 35 mph within a day.

The 2022-23 NFL season kicked off last night with the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs falling to the Detroit Lions in an upset, 21-20. Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for two touchdowns and 226 yards, but also tossed a pivotal interception that was returned for a touchdown in the third quarter. The Chiefs had enter the season as the favorites to win Super Bowl LVIII, with Mahomes favored to be named MVP.
The rest of the league gets underway beginning Sunday (see schedule). Notable matchups include the Washington Commanders first game under new ownership versus the Arizona Cardinals (1 pm ET, FOX), last year's runner-up Philadelphia Eagles visiting the New England Patriots (4:25 pm ET, CBS), and a divisional clash between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants (8:20 pm ET, NBC).
Monday night features New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers hosting the Buffalo Bills (8:15 pm ET, ABC/ESPN). The game is Rodgers' first after spending 18 years in Green Bay, a tenure that included four MVP awards and a Super Bowl title in 2011.
Separately, Cincinnati QB Joe Burrow agreed to a five-year, $275M extension (with $220M guaranteed), making the Ohio native the league's top-paid quarterback.

A rescue operation is underway in Turkey for American Mark Dickey, who remains trapped more than 3,400 feet inside the Morca cave in the Taurus Mountains. Dickey, a 40-year-old speleologist—or cave researcher—was coleading a mission to find and map a new passage in the cave when he suffered from gastrointestinal bleeding Saturday, rendering him unable to leave the cave.
The 4,186-foot-deep cave—Turkey's third deepest and the 38th deepest in the world—poses extreme challenges with its wet, cold environment (39-42 degrees Fahrenheit) and narrow passages. Over 170 cave rescue experts, including teams from Turkey, Italy, Hungary, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Poland, are collaborating in the effort. The complex rescue operation is expected to take several days and likely involves hoisting him to the surface on a stretcher through narrow passages that are being widened to facilitate the rescue.
Rescuers reached Dickey inside the cave Tuesday, providing blood and fluids, and were able to stabilize his condition; he can allegedly walk independently, but it remains unclear if he can climb out without assistance. See updates here.

When we're applying for new credit cards, the first thing we look for are perks: What's in it for us? And one of our favorite perks is a long 0% intro APR period to help us get our ducks in a row for a month or two.
So imagine our surprise and excitement when The Ascent found a credit card that offers not one, not two, not six, but 21 months of 0% intro APR on qualifying balance transfers (taking you into 2025!) and 12 months of 0% APR on purchases. But an intro 0% APR isn't the only perk—this card has a handful of other benefits, making it a slam dunk for those of us looking to spread out payments and enjoy some flexibility.
Looking to avoid credit card interest for one of the longest periods we’ve come across? Who isn't? We don't think this card can be beaten. Apply today.
