For much of this year, Donald Trump has stayed well within the Right Wing media bubble — appearing on Fox News and being interviewed by sycophantic simps like Hugh Hewitt. But this weekend, Trump emerged from his safe space to appear on Meet the Press — the most establishment media platform ever invented.

Kristen Welker’s interview sparked fury online. I cannot add much to that vituperative debate, but I know Kristen from when she covered the Obama White House on a daily basis. She is an excellent, smart, and fair-minded journalist; and those folks are in short supply. The executives at NBC who thought a Trump interview was a good way to launch her run as Meet the Press host should all find another profession because they clearly have zero understanding of the media and political environment.

With that off my chest, the main takeaway from the interview is that Donald Trump is in general election mode. He is no longer worrying about “DeSanctus,” Pence, Ramaswamy, or any of the lesser lights who failed to gain traction. Trump’s focus is now on the more moderate voters he made no effort to persuade in 2020.

Most Democrats assumed that Trump would be tied down until next spring in a divisive primary that required him to adopt an even more extreme position to fend off a challenge to his MAGA base.
