The DO Lectures - 9 Research Tools To Help You

To find different answers, we need to go look in different places. I was taught that back in my advertising days by my mentor, the multi-awarding winning creative legend Graham Fink.

So today, I will share 9 alternative research tools or methods I use.

Tools that:

• Give you another way of looking at things.

• You can play around with.

• That will help you create a different answer.

Some of them you will know, some you may not, but all give your brain another way of seeing the problem that you are working on.

1. Let’s start with trying to find out what your customers are searching for about you.

This tool will tell you what product or service you currently do, but interestingly, it will tell you what you don’t do but they wish you did.

You will find out the pain points that maybe you didn’t know your tribe were facing.

Hint: It’s more than you think. I shared this one at my London Workshop last week, and one lady said, ‘How do they do this? Her mind was blown.

It is a tool from Neil Patel, who is super geeky about marketing.

2. To think big, you need to zoom out.

This one is a bit of fun, but it helps me to expand my ambition for my ideas.

This is the drone awards for 2023. It gives you context. It gives you perspective. It also gives your brain permission to think bigger.

3. Find relationships between interested tribes. Use Reddit to help you.

Why?

One of the top 10 social media apps in the world. So, there is lots of data and, therefore a good place to research. It has 1.6 billion monthly active users. Quite big.

This tool helps you work out relationships between different interest groups. For example, if you type in Nomad, it will give you all the amazing subgroups of that.

It is super geeky but will get you to fink different.

4. Find where the attention is going.

Use Redditt to show. Also, pretty geeky. You can find out the growth of an interest in a year. Again, look in different places to get different viewpoints.

5. Compare trends with a timeline.

This one you will know, but it is surprising how few people actually use it. If you search Google trends over the last 5 years, it hasn’t grown.

That is how to use it; compare two things over a timeframe. It will show you where the attention is going.

6. Read 1-star book reviews in your market.

This will tell you what they were looking for when they bought the book but did not get answers too.

That is what is still missing. The gap. Can you fill the gap by answering their unmet need?

7. Pick a person from history that you admire.

And then, go on ChatGPT and ask it to approach the problem you are trying to solve from the point of view of your hero: Van Gogh, etc.

The ideas will come from their perspective, not yours. It may sound odd, but is oddly effective.

8. Use podcasts to find different finking.

This tool is called Getphronic. You can type a podcast that you found helpful in your research journey, and it will find lots of others you didn’t know about in a related field.

9. Read more fiction.

It pushes and pulls our imagination in different directions. It helps us draw pictures of things that don’t exist.

It gets us to switch off. Which is when the best ideas come.
