What is your "official" professional role and field?
I currently hold the position of a social and clinical psychologist, contributing to my community through rural service at a health center in Cusco.
What if your unofficial role and field?
I serve as the General Director of Ñañaykuna, an organization dedicated to the empowerment of indigenous women, rural communities and slums in Cusco. We provide essential educational tools for personal improvement, addressing vital areas such as violence prevention, self-care and sexual education, taught in indigenous Quechua and Spanish languages.
How did you get to where you are today in your career?
I credit a significant portion of my achievements to Ñañaykuna, where I conducted groundbreaking research that propelled me to graduation. In 2021, I was honored to receive the esteemed National Youth Award, the highest accolade bestowed upon young individuals by the Peruvian government. Additionally, I earned recognition with the Good Youth Practice award from the Organization of American States. These accolades have opened doors, enabling me to engage in courses, internships, volunteer work, and create a meaningful impact through our organization.
What kind of support are you most excited to receive at this point in your career?
I'm originally from a rural community and have overcome numerous obstacles to found and lead Ñañaykuna with limited resources. At this point in my career, my main aspiration is to embark on a master's degree journey, which is why I would appreciate if bloomers could recommend master's degrees that involve social psychology and social projects focused on vulnerable populations. Achieving this goal would not only accelerate the growth of Ñañaykuna but would also provide me with the means to sustain our organizational purpose of empowering women survivors of violence from indigenous, rural and slum communities. Additionally, I am seeking to learn English, recognizing that this would unlock greater academic opportunities and strengthen the impact of my social organization.

🔎SOCIAL IMPACT EMPLOYER SPOTLIGHT
Packing up your life and moving from the UK to Madagascar might sound like a huge change, but for Eva it was a no-brainer.
“I’d just finished my Master’s degree in England and was looking for something meaningful to give my time to. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go, but I knew I didn’t want to go back home to Australia.” Without the pressure of time, and with some savings to live off, Eva decided to take the time to wait and apply for something that felt really meaningful.
She saw the ad for a position at Onja on an online job board and immediately knew she wanted to apply. “It was a few things - living by the beachside, great perks, being based somewhere new and exciting - but most of all it was the mission.”
As the world’s 6th poorest country, higher education in Madagascar is reserved for the 5% of people that can afford it. Onja is a social enterprise that trains underprivileged youth into world-class software developers. They find the brightest students in Madagascar who can’t afford to continue their education, and train them in English language and software development. After just two-and-a-half years, these bright young people are ready to work as remote front-end software developers in international tech teams. Once in a job, Onja’s developers earn a good salary that helps them support their families and pay forward the opportunity to a new wave of students.
Eva knew she wanted a purpose-driven role, and Onja ticked all the boxes. “After spending some time in the nonprofit world, I’d become a bit disillusioned by the way things worked. As a social enterprise, Onja is different from more traditional ‘development’ focused jobs. I still get to make an incredible difference with my work, but the model is sustainable and the real change is being driven by the developers we work with. I’m just here to support these talented young people as they build exciting careers for themselves, pay forward the opportunity to other students, and drive Madagascar’s development.”
In April this year, Eva accepted an offer to work with Onja. She immediately packed up her life and got on a plane to Antananarivo. Now, she works as the Public Relations Lead at Onja, and is loving every minute. “The work is challenging and fun, and Madagascar is a great place to live. But the thing that has really hooked me is the team. I feel like part of a family here. We go for dinner at least once a week, we plan events and activities, and just really like spending time together. International relocation can be hard, but not when you’re surrounded by people like this. Onja’s culture has made it easy to settle in and find a second home here in this beautiful country.”
Onja’s first cohort, ‘Wave 1’, consists of nineteen talented and committed graduates who are now working remotely for our partner companies in Europe and the US. With this immensely successful first group, and a proven social model, their goal is now to scale their impact: they aim to take on 360 new students over the next four years. But they need the right people on board to support this phase of growth. “While as many jobs as possible are filled by local Malagasy staff, there are some roles that need international expertise and support, especially in helping our developers get ready to work in international teams.”
Onja is currently hiring (yes, they sponsor visas + flight 😉💜) for multiple pivotal roles based out of their office in Toamasina on Madagascar’s east coast. You can find their open positions below, and email us if you'd like to join the Q&A with the team!
“Onja’s dream is to train thousands of new students each year. Working with us, you will be setting the foundations not just for this first cohort but the waves of youth that will follow in the future.”
