StackShare
Hi newsletterest18442,

We're thrilled to announce the launch of The Tech Stack File - a new way to organize, visualize, and make your tech stack data useful across applications. With that, we’ve got three new product announcements, so buckle up! 🚀

Stack File GitHub App

At its core, The Tech Stack File is a single YML file (techstack.yml) detailing the full tech stack and software supply chain of a Git repo, with metadata about each technology. It's comprehensive, covering open source, commercial software, SaaS, and infrastructure. It's like an enhanced Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) but more comprehensive and human-readable.

Tech stack data is scattered across spreadsheets and wikis at most companies. In collaboration with the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), our aim with The Tech Stack File is to establish a universal standard for tech stack data. This is just the first version, we'll need your feedback to turn it into something useful for everyone. To learn more about why we built this, check out the full blog post.

This file is available now- you can get your own tech stack files for any of your GitHub repos through the brand new FREE Stack File GitHub App. The GitHub app automatically generates a techstack.yml for each of your repos and it also visualizes it into a beautiful Markdown file called techstack.md ✨
The GitHub App keeps these files up to date as your tech stacks change via automated Pull Requests 🤯 You can think of it as automated tech stack docs! Having readily available tech stack data inside of GitHub helps with codebase onboarding, large scale migrations, and legal/compliance diligence tasks.

Check it out on Product Hunt 🚀
Oh, and you even get a mini snippet for your README 🙌
But wait, there’s more!

StackShare AI & StackShare Connect

To fully leverage this new file format, we're announcing StackShare AI - a way to leverage the entire StackShare knowledgebase with personalization layered in through your new tech stack files. Imagine being able to ask “who within my company has upgraded to React v18.2.0 in the past 2 months?”– via a conversational Slack bot. StackShare AI will be available to enterprise customers in early 2024, but you can sign up for the waitlist today.

Last but not least, we’re announcing StackShare Connect - an easy way for you to infuse your tech stack data into everyday apps and websites. We’re proud to partner with FOSSA, the developer-native Open Source Management Platform, as the first StackShare Connect provider. Soon you’ll be able to take your Tech Stack Files and integrate them into your FOSSA account to layer on compliance and governance policies.

You can read the full blog post announcement for more juicy details here.

Thank you to those of you who gave early feedback on The Tech Stack File, we've already made changes based on your comments 🙏 Please keep them coming! This is the beginning of a long journey we're embarking on to create a standard to make sure tech stack data is accessible to everyone.

Happy stacking!
