What if your unofficial role?
Diversity, Inclusivity & Equity Associate in the education sector.
How did you get to where you are today in your career?
At 7 years old, I eagerly joined my mother to volunteer at a shelter for abused women and children. The desire to help others ignited within me, planting the seed for a journey focused on equipping marginalized communities to compete in the world.
When I turned 16 after attending the Yale Young Global Scholars Program, a group of friends and I launched a non-profit initiative collecting and donating over 20,000 textbooks to 20 public schools across Ghana and Nigeria over the next 3 years. Our mission was to distribute these books to students in low-income communities, fostering a love for learning where resources were scarce.
After each event the desire to curate spaces that promote diversity, inclusivity and equity through education, innovation and community building grew. I have since then spent the last 8 years studying, researching and developing skills to enable me to do just that. This has looked like getting a law degree in my bachelors and currently studying Public Policy & Management for my masters. Along the way I developed many interests including Instructional Design, I became a trained Content writer through the Hackernoon Blogging Fellow and I am currently learning to produce my own music through the Master Your Music by Music Production for Women.
What kind of support are you most excited to receive at this point in your career?
At this stage in my career as a Nigerian studying abroad and aiming to work in Europe post-master’s, the support I need most includes:
1. Discovering social impact organizations: I'm eager to connect with organizations in Europe focused on diversity, inclusivity, and equity in education.
2. Exploring more diverse job openings: I'm excited to learn about roles and job opportunities where I can make an impact such as but not limited to research, policy analysis, consulting… across different sectors.
3. Career mentorship: Seeking mentorship from individuals with similar passions and goals, and individuals who experience navigating the European professional landscape as an international applicant.
4. Unexplored support options: Open to advice on aspects I might not be aware of, such as additional avenues of support, resources, or opportunities.
5. Insights on French-speaking opportunities: Specifically interested in advice, tips, and connections related to working in French-speaking countries.
6. Opportunities in music
Your relationship to “social impact”: has it evolved since you began your career?
Initially, my focus was on providing access to education for children in low-income communities in Nigeria. However, as my journey unfolded and my personal strengths as a singer-songwriter came to light, I began to see social impact through a different lens. I realized that impact is not confined to the walls of a classroom or the pages of a book; it's a versatile force that can manifest in various forms.
This realization prompted me to work on my first initiative after The Book Bank, a mentorship program for women interested in music production. In January 2024, I will first undergo mentorship with a seasoned producer and shortly after pay it forward by mentoring another woman. The goal is to equip and empower women in a field where their representation has been lacking. It's a shift from traditional education-centric impact to one that recognizes the power of mentorship and skill development in areas beyond formal schooling.
In essence, my understanding of social impact has evolved from providing educational access to a broader perspective that embraces diverse forms of empowerment, particularly within the realm of music production. It's a dynamic journey, demonstrating that impact can take shape in tune with one's passions and strengths.
Orange It Is, a music album promoting eco consciousness, by Black Girls Glow. It's a feminist NGO dedicated to building communities through the power of art. This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with female and non-binary artists for 9 days, crafting an album that goes beyond music – it's a vibrant call to action for a greener, more conscious world.
The track I led is titled 'We No Go Gree.' Imagine a chipmunk whose cozy tree home is callously destroyed for human development, leaving the little creature in distress. This powerful song is more than just a tune; it's a call to arms against deforestation, shining a spotlight on its devastating impact on our precious wildlife. Let's make waves, spark conversations, and together, turn the world from orange to green! 🌍
If you have any ideas or suggestions for how we can promote this form of advocacy, maybe partnerships with organizations or opportunities to perform in Europe please feel free to send me a message on The Bloom, Linkedin, or Instagram! With the current state of the world, and ongoing genocide in Gaza (please join us in demanding for a ceasefire), there's never been a more crucial time to protect and project our power; no seed is too small to make a difference 🌱 Along the way it can be difficult to keep up with mindfulness / routines, that's why we've partnered with the mindfulness newsletter, Avo Surfer, to bring a mindfulness practice accessible to anyone: breathing. Osman, the creator behind Avo Surfer, shared his own personal journey with breathing:
"I didn't really know how impactful breathing techniques could be for me especially because I thought it was something so.... simple. I felt like I needed something more complex or advanced to help me deal with stress and burnout in my job. Meditation didn't really work for me because my mind would have too many thoughts so I wouldn't calm down. I tried yoga, fancy mindfulness tools tanks, but nothing really helped. It was only when I came across the 4-7-8 breathing method that my life completely changed, literally. Here's a few of my favorite breathing exercises you can try:
