The Story

Concerns are mounting over Gaza’s two largest hospitals.

What’s happening?

Hospital staff says that fuel ran out at both Shifa and al-Quds hospitals over the weekend. Gaza’s health ministry says that at least five patients have died in part due to the lack of fuel, including at least three babies. Dozens more are at risk while thousands take shelter at both hospitals. The World Health Organization says Shifa is “not functioning as a hospital anymore.” The Palestinian Red Crescent says that al-Quds has fallen into a similar situation as it's “no longer operational.” It comes amid clashes between Hamas militants and Israeli soldiers nearby.

Why is the fighting happening near hospitals?

These facilities are located in northern Gaza, where Israel last month told civilians to evacuate. Israel says Hamas has set up its command center under Shifa and has released an alleged map of the hospital, including what it says are underground installations beneath it. Hamas denies operating in Shifa. Note: It is against international law to target hospitals, unless they are hiding fighters or storing weapons, with Israel bearing the burden of proof. The news comes as the UN has accused Israel and Hamas of war crimes, including for Hamas’s deadly attack on October 7th. Meanwhile, Israel and Hamas are also exchanging blame over the lack of fuel at Shifa hospital.

Israel says it’s been in contact with hospital staff and that it's prepared to evacuate patients. It also said it left 300 liters of fuel for the hospital but that Hamas blocked it — which Hamas denies. Shifa’s staff said the amount offered was not enough to keep the hospital operational. They’ve also said any evacuation would endanger patients amid ongoing fighting. The European Union issued a statement condemning Hamas for using “hospitals and civilians as human shields” while calling on Israel to show “maximum restraint” to protect civilians.

In France, more than 100,000 people marched against antisemitism as the country sees a surge in antisemitic attacks. It comes as French President Emmanuel Macron joined calls for a cease-fire.
Tensions at college campuses are still rising — with students on both sides saying they are witnessing acts of hate. It comes as Columbia University suspended Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace until the end of the fall semester for allegedly violating school policies.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams (D). Over the weekend, media outlets reported that the FBI seized the mayor’s two iPhones and iPad. The FBI is reportedly investigating if Adams pressured the New York Fire Department to sign off on Turkey’s high-rise consulate in Manhattan in exchange for money. In 2021, after winning the Democratic mayoral primary, Adams allegedly called up the city’s then-fire commissioner to speed along the permit process for Turkey — even though fire officials deemed the building unsafe. In response to the FBI’s alleged investigation, the NYC mayor said, “I have nothing to hide.” Earlier this month, the FBI searched the home of Adams’ campaign fundraise r, as it looks into whether there was any conspiracy with the Turkish government.

Who’s likely to stay behind bars…

Peter Nygard. Yesterday, a Canadian jury found the former fashion mogul guilty on four counts of sexual assault after a six-week trial. Five women testified Nygard — whose company runs ALIA and SLIMS — assaulted them in his private bedroom suite at his Toronto company’s headquarters in the 1980s to the mid-2000s. Nygard denied the charges, saying he wouldn't have conducted himself “in that kind of manner.” The prosecutors called Nygard’s testimony unreliable. He still faces criminal charges in three other jurisdictions, including Quebec, Manitoba, and the US — where he’s fighting extradition.

Who’s taking matters into her own hands…

Keke Palmer. Last week, a Los Angeles judge granted the actress a temporary restraining order against her ex-boyfriend Darius Jackson. The order granted Palmer sole custody of their 8-month-old son, with no visitation for Jackson. Palmer says Jackson's physical and emotional abuse hasn't stopped since the couple's two-year relationship ended in October. The actress says Jackson trespassed into her home, adding that she fears for her and her son's safety. Jackson hasn’t commented on the allegations. A hearing in the case is scheduled for next month.

Who’s saying ‘that’s all folks’...

Megan Rapinoe. On Saturday, the US soccer legend suffered an injury three minutes into the final match of her professional career. Rapinoe — who helped the US win two World Cup trophies and gold and bronze Olympic medals — said it was “the worst possible outcome” but that she's “super proud” of her whole career.
