It is December, and I have not bought a single Christmas present. I have not even thought about Christmas presents, or really Christmas. I went into town the other morning, bright and early, and marvelled at this other city that seemed to have sprung up - one made of trees and lights and wreaths around windows. It was a crisp winter’s day, the kind that helps the grey of London’s buildings really shine. It was beautiful, and it was a surprise. I felt like a character in a film who sleepwalks through the seasons.

Last year I made more of a fuss of the notion of giving a savour subscription.
