fresh soil
Dani is an activist turned coach for social justice, offering politicized transformational coaching for changemakers of all kinds. They've spent more than 10 years contributing to queer, trans, feminist, climate & social justice movements, and have been through different cycles of relating to activism: from finding meaning and belonging, to feeling disillusioned and heartbroken, from the front lines, to the backstage, from wanting to change the world to struggling to transform themselves - and everything in between. Dani is a somatics/embodiment student, and a queer, non binary person. They're also...one of the phenomenal coaches in The Bloom 💜Here were some of their reflections to questions from the community:
I am on a career transition trying to get in the social impact world, but there are still many doubts regarding which path to take, which cause to advocate for, etc. Could you recommend exercises or any resource you find interesting that can help with those points? How to access your inner and true desires so you can better give direction to your career?
Doubts are valuable because they are there to protect you and make sure that your safety, dignity, and belonging are kept intact in the process. Work with them, but don’t let them have the main seat at the table.
So, what do those doubts tell you about your needs? How can you meet some of those needs so that your body feel open to experiment and play?
Talking about the body, I feel that many times in situations like this the thinking mind is making it more complicated than it is. So I invite you to feel into this questions and get access to more information this way.
What makes you excited? Curious? Enthusiastic? What moves you? Observe yourself day to day and like a little research, allow yourself to gather the data from all parts of your body.
Some tools that might be helpful, depending on your personal preference and style:
Tarot or any other projective/interpretative cards (OH cards, Dixit, and many more) that allows me to tap into my intuition and find new ways of seeing the same thing: every day you can ask the same question and pull a new card; see what it brings in you, read the description, etc.
Dance, movement, activating your body and bringing it “online” as you explore this
Doing something completely new and out of the ordinary to give your mind a reset
And last but definitely not least, you don’t need to have the perfect answer before you start doing something. Sometimes it might be even better to just choose a thing and start exploring it. I don’t know your situation, whether you have a job and need to change jobs soon, or you just want to start slowly exploring. Maybe you tell me more about that. But however it may be, perhaps the first step is going for a coffee with a friend who’s already working in social impact, or participating in a workshop of an organisation you like, meet the people, see how does your body respond to those conversation, etc.
I think putting this in terms of “inner and true desires” can put pressure on yourself, as if you are searching for “the one”. In reality desires are very fluid, and they change all the time. I think that the best we can do is never loose track of where we are in this moment, what is important for us, what do we feel called to do, what resources we have, etc and start from there.
