No need to dismay,
I'm telling you why:
Dollar Scholar’s comiiiiiiin' to town.

Happy Scholardays! On one hand, I can’t believe 2023 is already almost over. On the other, I’m ready to log off for a long winter’s nap.

But, wow, what a year we had! Over the course of 46 issues, we learned the benefits of having a safe, investigated TikTok Shop and figured out why store return policies have gotten so bad lately. We made it through several historic bank collapses, yet another debt-ceiling debacle, a slew of Fed rate hikes and Hot Labor Summer. We consulted experts about big questions — like how to deal with an expensive medical bill — and small ones — like the merits of girl math and whether it’s OK to put stickers on credit cards to make them cuter. And, of course, we collectively ooh-ed and ahh-ed over Harry Styles and a bunch of adorable 401(k)9/401(k)itty contributions.

To close out 2023, I’m sharing our annual reader feedback issue, which includes money victories, tips and responses to questions I posed in issues of Dollar Scholar. Without further ado...

On health insurance: You forgot to mention one other health acronym… HDHP (high deductible health plan), which is needed to have a HSA. — Scholar Stephen

On a million dollars not being what it used to be: A million dollars is only worth $40,000/year based on a 4% drawdown — hardly a lavish retirement. But it's better to have it than not have it. It all begins when you start, and follow through. — Scholar Smith

On open banking: While I find open banking intriguing, I think there should be a caveat. There are so many data breaches these days, even in large and reputable organizations. It seems wise to suggest that before picking a third-party option for open banking, one should investigate the quality and safety of their data management system. — Scholar Mary

On card designs: Wells Fargo allowed me to upload my own photo to my debit card, which I thought was pretty cool! I now have a picture of Idaho Sawtooth mountains on there! — Scholar Marilyn

On ice cream: My favorite ice cream flavor is either Jeni’s brown butter almond brittle or cookie dough or my grandfather’s homemade vanilla ice cream. — Scholar Allie

On pet names: If I were to own a chicken, I would name it Eggstasy! Cluck cluck! — Scholar Terri

On tipping: I tip when they do something for me that I couldn't have done for myself. Carry my bags to the car, food to the table, etc. I do not tip if they’re doing the job their boss pays them to do. — Scholar Heather

i used to think accolades and money was the only thing that could make my heart soar. i’ve learned that what truly alights my soul is a rly yummy baguette

On owning gold: Gold does not outperform the S&P 500 in the long run, so I can’t justify owning it when I’m working and contributing to my 401(k) twice a month.  I understand the safeness, but I would rather keep buying shares in the stock market for better growth for retirement. — Scholar Mike

On digital savings accounts: I moved $20,000 of my emergency fund to an online savings account (4.5% APY!). I couldn’t afford not to. No ATM/checks, but I can use ACH transfer to/from my brick and mortar checking account. — Scholar Megan

On Apple Pay: I use Apple Pay when I travel in Europe. It works really well, especially for transportation, buses, trains, subways as well [as] in restaurants, just about everywhere! — Scholar Andrew

On celeb alcohol brands: I vote for Casamigos. George Clooney and Rande Gerber (Cindy Crawford’s husband) own it. I don’t even like tequila. But look at their delivery trucks. — Scholar Tricia

On store cards: While a retailer’s credit card can be a good starter card for someone with zero credit, you should be cautious about opening more than one of them. — Scholar Mike

On wedding gifts: I have always heeded the advice that you should give at least what the wedding costs per guest. It's hard to get an exact figure, of course, but easy enough to get to a reasonable guesstimate. Don't pay more than you can afford, but if you can afford it, you should at least consider [it]. — Scholar Jack

On the best Girl Scout cookie: Thin Mints. — Scholar Sharon

Smart MONEY MOVE

SavingsInterest rates are currently at a two-decade high... and that's amazing news for savers. With the best rates above 5%, high-yield savings accounts provide a chance for you to earn significant returns via compound interest. Don't settle for the paltry 0.46% average offered by most regular savings accounts — make over 10 times that with a high-yield option. You'll accomplish your short- and long-term financial goals in no time.

Check out our list of top high-yield savings accounts now to find out how much you could potentially earn.

Travis Kelce

Football player Travis Kelce spent Thanksgiving without girlfriend Taylor Swift, instead feasting on KFC. The Chiefs tight end ordered 56 pieces of fried chicken, 80 wings, three catering-sized mashed potatoes and gravy, two mac and cheese orders, and two orders of corn, which by my estimates is over $280 worth of food. Touchdown!

Internet gold
five things I'm loving online right now
1
I recently tried the viral TikTok hack that upgrades the can of standard Pillsbury Grands! cinnamon rolls into huge Cinnabon-style pastries, and it totally worked. All you have to do is pour heavy cream and a butter-brown sugar-cinnamon mixture over the top and bake. Highly recommend.
2
I am, predictably, a sucker for Spotify Wrapped memes. (In case you’re wondering, my year was absolutely dominated by Noah Kahan.)
3
Post Malone covered Elvis live at Graceland. Yes, that’s a real sentence I just typed.
4
Devoted fans of The Great British Baking Show are running full-fledged fantasy leagues where 5,000 people are watching, betting and competing for points based on bakers’ performances. And though the show itself is famous for its feel-good atmosphere, the fantasy league is intense. “When Guiseppe beat Jurgen during German week [in 2021], it was like when Nadal beat Federer at Wimbledon,” one participant told the Wall Street Journal.

Meet Cameo and Onyx, two festive felines who had a productive financial year and are now ready for Santa Claws.

I’m taking the next few Wednesdays off to celebrate the holidays. I’ll see you in January with more money questions, answers and — of course — cute pets.

P.S. Did you have any money victories in 2023? What’s your favorite Elvis song? How many pieces of fried chicken do you think you could eat? Send visions of sugarplums to julia@money.com.
