Tim Ferriss - 5-Bullet Friday — December 22, 2023

Hi All!
Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. Feel free to forward along if the spirit moves you.
Blog post I’m reading
“What’s in My Bag, 2023.” I have never met anyone more meticulous about everyday carry than Matt Mullenweg. Each year, he publishes an updated “What’s in my bag” blog post, and this is the latest. For a fun comparison, see this photo of Matt’s gadgets from nearly a decade ago.
What I’m watching
“A Viral Dance and ‘Happiness Campaign’ Frustrates Iran’s Clerics.” (NYT) Original Instagram video. Alternate link if you have trouble viewing the article.
Book I’m savoring
Masterpieces of Fantasy Art by Dian Hanson. This is a sumptuous dive back into the most gorgeous art I met through Heavy Metal magazine, fantasy nerdom, and everything in between. I think of it as a buffet of creative inspiration, as the styles vary widely. From the official description: “Fantasy art, that colorful blend of myth, muscle and sexy maidens, took off in 1923 with the launch of Weird Tales magazine, was reinvigorated in the 1960s with The Lord of the Rings, Conan the Barbarian paperbacks with Frank Frazetta covers, and the late ’60s emergence of fantasy psychedelia. This book features original paintings, contextualized by preparatory sketches, sculptures, calendars, magazines, and paperback books, for an immersive dive into this dynamic, fanciful genre.”
Slightly healthier junk food I’ll weave into the holidays
Tate’s Bake Shop Ginger Zinger Cookies. I can easily finish an entire bag of these chewy beauties on cheat day. They are gluten-free, which I only learned after the fact. Tate’s Chocolate Chip Cookies are also fantastic, but the Ginger Zingers are my hands-down fave. In between butter cookies and gingerbread men, I’ll have a few of these around Christmas to convince myself I’m behaving.
Quote I’m pondering once again
“The secret to doing good research is always to be a little underemployed. You waste years by not being able to waste hours.”
— Amos Tversky

You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with my interview from Antarctica with Matt Mullenweg, my conversation with renowned chef Samin Nosrat, and this clip from 2008 of me breakdancing (yes, really).
And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.
Have a wonderful weekend, all.
And happy holidays to you and yours!
Tim
