14 Reasons to Be Excited for 2024

What a decade this year has been. While 2023 may not be over just yet, we’re already looking forward to the year ahead. And good news: There’s a lot to be excited about. Here are some events — cultural, political, astronomical — that you may want to put on your cals...

January 12: Get in, loser — “Mean Girls” is once again hitting the big screen. While Tina Fey will return as Ms. Norbury in the new film (based on the Broadway musical), expect a fresh cast. That includes Reneé Rapp as Regina George, Busy Philipps as Mrs. George, and Jon Hamm as Coach Carr. So fetch.

January 15: Finally find out who is named best in show — when Anthony Anderson hosts the strike-delayed 75th Emmy Awards. Expect “Succession,” which earned the most nominations (a cool 27) to bring main character energy. Same with other top contenders, like “The Last of Us,” “The White Lotus,” and “Ted Lasso.”

February 4: Trevor Noah may be the host, but women will likely do the most at the 2024 Grammy Awards. That’s because female musicians — like SZA, Taylor Swift, and boygenius — make up seven of the eight nominees in the night’s top categories (see: album, record, and song of the year). Plus, “Barbie” is entering the night with 11 nods.

February 4: After almost 25 years, HBO will curb, well, “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” When the 12th and final season premieres, everyone’s favorite curmudgeon, Larry David, will be joined by Tracey Ullman, Ted Danson, and more A-list guest stars. Fingers crossed it’ll be pretty, pretty, pretty good.

February 7: Abbott Elementary” is back in class. While season 3 of Quinta Brunson’s hilarious sitcom will be shorter than season 2 (see: the writers’ strike), there’s still plenty of time for Principal Ava’s gut-busting zingers and lots of will-they-won’t-they tension from Janine and Gregory. Particularly since the premiere will be a special hour-long episode. A+.

February 11: Just before Valentine’s Day, tens of thousands of football fans will touch down in Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII. TBD who’ll take home the Vince Lombardi Trophy, but you can bet on a big W for Allegiant Stadium, which will host the game. Same for Usher, who will headline the halftime show. Oh my gosh.

February 16: Can’t get enough of Jennifer Lopez? More than two decades after Jenny from the Block released “This Is Me...Then,” the multi-hyphenate is back with “This Is Me...Now.” And just like the first album, the new one — and film — has been heavily influenced by, yup, Ben. After all, a lot has happened for Bennifer between now and then.

February 21: Prepare for a high chance of thunder y lightning — when Bad Bunny kicks off his “Most Wanted” tour in Salt Lake City. After that, the Puerto Rican superstar will spend more than three months on the road, traveling to dozens of cities across North America — before wrapping things up with otra noche en Miami.

April 8: Remember how everyone dropped everything to view the “Great American Eclipse” in 2017? Well, expect another total eclipse (of the heart) when the 2024 total solar eclipse passes over Mexico, Canada, and more than 10 states — particularly since there won’t be another one visible in the US until 2044.

May 6: Calling all Disney adults — the theme for the 2024 Met Gala is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” To be fair, it’ll be more of an ode to fashion history, nature, and technology than Princess Aurora. Either way, get ready for some Maleficent, err, magnificent celeb looks

July 26: Let the games begin. A century after it last hosted the Olympics, Paris will welcome millions of visitors and 10,500 athletes competing in 32 sports — including the debut of breaking. Allez, allez, allez.

October 18: Turns out, London won’t be the end of the Eras era. After nearly a year abroad, Taylor Swift will return to the US to make more wildest dreams come true. Are you ready for it?

November 5: Make your voice heard — during the 2024 presidential election. While President Biden and former President Trump are eyeing a return to office, former UN ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) are still vying to snag the keys to the Oval Office. Also up for grabs? The House and Senate, where Republicans and Dems, respectively, have very narrow majorities.

November 27: Ready to defy gravity? After considerable delay, the first of two “Wicked” films will finally fly into theaters. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will play Elphaba and Glinda (formerly Galinda), respectively. And they’ll be joined by a cast that includes Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, and Bowen Yang. It’s gonna be popular.
