Ok it's 2024 y'all, time to buy a business!

I did a little piece on X (Twitter on this the other day) that you can see here But really thought that it was an important breakdown to share with you all in an email.

Its VERY important to understand that once you have the right tool

You can look at any business and know how to improve it, and if it's worth your time.

Lets look at one of the frame works for this :

Ok so you decided to finally do it & you're going to buy an online business!

But your biggest fear...is how to grow it Well, all methods of traffic generation work...

• Cold email
• Organic Social
• Paid Social
• SEO
• Paid Search
• Display

All of it...but what your job as an entrepreneur if you build a buy a business, to do, is to figure out which one of those channels is worth pushing on

Lets look at an example Ok so maybe you buy a small saas - lets say its a CRM for agency owners, that you found on Acquire.com

It costs $197 a month for customers and you can see the average life time value of a customer is $3940 since on average a customer uses it for 20 months before cancelling

For now, lets ignore the COGS of the software, and say that means you can spend $4000 to acquire a customer and still make money!

Thats exciting

A quick search in Ahrefs lets you find some keywords that you think your new business you bought can rank for. It already has authority and a decent DR since someone else already launched it and it, so you decide SEO could be a good route here.

Thats one growth lever pulled, but you realize that it could take a couple months to rank, and the search volume isn't great for the keywords youre finding You DEF want to create the content and go after those keywords, but you also want to ramp this up and start getting more results and growth for this business you have bought

So you start thinking about what the other channels are

You dont have the budget to spend $20k a month on paying an agency to run ads for you as is. Maybe the retainer is $3500 a month + % of your ad spend and you really need to spend $10k+ a month they tell you to see what works and test campaigns

You decide you can learn some media buying, and save that testing for when you have more budget, or you have your organic SEO traffic built up and you can retarget them.

So you keep going down the list, thinking

"what is another type of traffic I can try?"

You get to cold emailing...

"Hmm ok for a couple hundred bucks a month, I can get something like listkit or apollo going and start emailing agency owners and DMing them on Twitter and LinkedIn"

For a few hundred dollars a month in cost, you realize that you can get 20 calls booked, and can close 4 of them on a trial.

Up front this is only $800 you bring in month one, but knowing your old CLTV (customer lifetime value) of $4000, we now realize that effort is worth $16k to you...

As a part time effort this starts to look very worth it

Worth it enough that you could hire an SDR (sales person) in the future, and justify paying them $3k a month + commission

I think you are starting to see how this can work.

But its not always that cold emailing is the answer.

SEO is the only answer that works for ALL online businesses

Lets say you bought a blog, a content site, a niche site if you will

If youre making $35 for every 1k visitors to your site, then cold emailing people and getting 50 to see your site a day is not going to work and will be a waste of your time and money

For most media business, the route is going to be SEO and organic social

Once you understand how to look at businesses and go through some simple checklists, its pretty easy to understand what levers can be pulled for their growth.

So learn the basics, and start looking for acquisitions, before you know it, you'll be able to buy your first business, and complete change the way you look at making money forever
