Dani is an activist turned coach for social justice, offering politicized transformational coaching for changemakers of all kinds. They've spent more than 10 years contributing to queer, trans, feminist, climate & social justice movements, and have been through different cycles of relating to activism: from finding meaning and belonging, to feeling disillusioned and heartbroken, from the front lines, to the backstage, from wanting to change the world to struggling to transform themselves - and everything in between. Dani is a somatics/embodiment student, and a queer, non binary person. They're also...one of the phenomenal coaches in The Bloom. Here were some of their reflections to a question from the community:
Based on your experience, how do you think we can embark on a sustainable professional journey to establish and contribute to transformative companies and projects? I believe that working on roles that genuinely make a difference often requires sacrificing a stable salary, which may not be a viable or sustainable option for most of us.
I’d start by asking yourself:
What does a sustainable journey (or even life and career) look like for you?Get as concrete as possible: x amount of $, how does your time/day/week/year look like, style of work, etc? What are the non-negotiables? (maybe time off, holidays, health benefits, etc) What are things that are not so important for you now, so you could compromise?
Where did you learn that belief around roles that make a difference = sacrificing a stable salary? For what does it serve you in this moment?
What you say is true, and there are many other truths. I’ve met people working in NGOs with very good pay, as well as people in the corporate sector saying they are not paid enough. It all depends on the reference points we have. In this case, what matters most is what are your needs for a sustainable life at the moment. Clearly defining these parameters will help you navigate this more easily. If you live in a big city with big expenses might be different than living in a shared house or with your parents.
The other thing I’d ask you is: what does it mean to genuinely make a difference? How will you know that your role is genuinely making a difference? What tells you that you don’t genuinely make a difference in the role you have now? Are there ways you can make a difference from where you are now? What else would you need to be able to do that?
Also: do you know any people who managed to have a sustainable life while having a career that genuinely makes a difference? How did they do it?
I hope these questions will support you to uncover some more nuance, and in this way get you closer to what you what's yours to do, in a way that brings you the satisfaction you need.

community garden
Diversifying the social impact organizations you follow has never been more joyful 😉 Bloomers lead incredible social impact projects around the world, here's a few to support this week 🌍 🇮🇳Newsletter on Diversity Equity Inclusion, Justice, and Leadership in the workplace: "I'm an educator, writer, and queer human from Chennai. In the last decade, I've worked with oppressed communities as an educator, curriculum designer, facilitator, and community builder. During the Covid-19 pandemic, I began seeing stories about companies undertaking DEI efforts in the workplace. But so many of these measures have turned out to be tokenistic attempts from capitalist giants to boost their brand reputation and appear inclusive. So, I decided to dig deeper and understand what it takes to build a workplace that can truly be inclusive, equitable, diverse, and just. What kind of leadership do we need to cultivate to do this? What does it mean to dismantle oppressive systems in the workplace? How can we foster a culture of wellbeing, care, and justice at work? How can we be harder on exclusionary and harmful systems and softer on human beings? These are the questions that I will will attempt to explore through my newsletter."
🇩🇪#MakeMacroMatter project helps you overcome barriers to learning about macro social work:"I began this project as a macro social work student outraged by the lack of educational resources, job placements, and public knowledge of macro social work. I discovered that even social work governing bodies primarily focus on clinical or direct-service social work. Inspired by macro social worker / student-led campaigns dating back to 2013, I decided to start the #MakeMacroMatter project."
🇧🇷 Study group for health professionals to integrate psychological dimensions of sexual health into clinical practice: "As a cisgender woman from Brazil, I have personally faced many difficulties in finding appropriate care for sexual pain. Through my experiences, I've realized that the lack of sexual education, combined with the stigma around SRHR, has resulted in a severe lack of knowledge of sex-positive health practices. Since graduating as a psychologist and sex therapist, I have been committed to providing evidence-based care to individuals and advocating for the importance of sexual well-being with other health professionals. Through this study group, my goal is to educate practitioners on the psychological aspects of sexual well-being and empower them with sex-positive practices."
🇮🇳 Old World Order, a history project on communities that have been overlooked: "My immense love for history motivated me to start a platform called, "Old World Order" that aims to shed light on communities that have been given less significance in mainstream history. When I was in my final year of high school, I noticed how the textbooks didn't write about the histories of the regional communities. I realised that there are so many communities that we have never heard about and if we don't preserve them, there will be a day these stories will be forgotten. So, I decided to contribute my part to do something about it."
