Republican presidential candidate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis looks on during a campaign event at The Grass Wagon

These Boots Were Made for Walking

The Story

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is out of the race.

Catch me up.

Yesterday, he dropped his bid for the Republican presidential nomination. When DeSantis first launched his campaign in May, GOP leaders viewed him as the best candidate to have a fighting chance against former President Trump. DeSantis was (relatively) young, had made Florida the center of the culture wars, and polled well against President Biden in swing states. Now, the Florida governor — who once called Trump a “high risk” and “low reward” nominee — is endorsing the former president.

So what went wrong?

The key question. Last week, DeSantis lost Iowa's GOP caucuses by 30 points. Some blame inexperienced advisers and Trump's resurgence for the campaign's failure. Others think he just didn't have the charisma to take on Trump and that he didn’t vibe with voters. In a statement on X, DeSantis said it became clear that “a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance.”

What does this mean for Trump vs. Haley?

The two are set to face off tomorrow in the New Hampshire primary. While New Hampshire polls showed former UN ambassador Nikki Haley ahead of DeSantis, she still lagged behind Trump. A recent poll showed Trump 11 points ahead. Still, Haley is eyeing a win next month in her home state of South Carolina, where she served as governor from 2011 to 2017. For now, Haley's saying, "may the best woman win."

The GOP field — which had at least 10 contenders at one point — has quickly dwindled to two. Now, some political analysts say a Trump win in New Hampshire could end the GOP’s nominating race before it even really kicks off.

And Also...This

What’s still rising…

The death toll in Gaza. Yesterday, health officials in Gaza said more than 25,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the Israel-Hamas war. This comes amid growing pressure for Israel and Hamas to end the fighting. The US, Egypt, and Qatar are reportedly working on a deal that would end the war and secure the release of over 100 hostages believed to be taken from Israel. It comes after Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said he rejected an earlier deal from Hamas that would've left the militants in control of Gaza. Meanwhile, tensions mounted across the Middle East: On Saturday, the US said a missile attack by Iranian-backed forces wounded several US military personnel in Iraq. It happened the same day a strike killed five of Iran's military advisers in Syria.

What FIFA wants to stop…

Racism. Over the weekend, FIFA president Gianni Infantino called for teams to automatically forfeit a game if their fans commit racist acts toward the opposing team. For years, soccer teams have struggled with how to best address racism. After losing the Euro 2020 finals, three Black players on England’s team faced racist attacks online. In 2022, someone threw a banana at Brazilian soccer player Richarlison as he celebrated a goal. Just this weekend, AC Milan’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan said he walked off the pitch after hearing “monkey noises” from the crowd. Currently, FIFA has a “three-step process” to address racism: stop a play twice before abandoning a game. Now, Infantino says that’s not enough but hasn’t outlined how FIFA plans to move forward with stricter measures.

Who shoots and scores…

Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer. Yesterday, she became the winningest coach in college basketball history. She got her 1,203rd victory, beating former Duke men’s coach Mike Krzyzewski's record. Another day, another layup.

…Oh and speaking of big wins, 20-year-old Nick Dunlap became the first amateur to win the PGA Tour since 1991.

What would’ve been today…

The 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Today, VP Kamala Harris is expected to head to Wisconsin, where she will be talking about reproductive rights — a focus of President Biden's 2024 reelection campaign.
