I first purchased a black turtleneck during my senior year of college. I had a work banquet to attend and I wanted to channel my inner Audrey Hepburn, a la Funny Face. I paired it with slim, ankle-length black trousers and ballet flats and felt chic beyond my 22 years.

Ever since then, the simple black turtleneck has been a wardrobe piece I keep coming back to. Worn with virtually any bottom or layered under a dress, this versatile garment is both practical and classic. I’ve tried several brands over the years, but the one that currently ticks all the boxes for me is the Supima® Micro-Rib Turtleneck from Everlane (£48).

It’s also great for those days you can’t fathom making one more decision. Whenever I travel, I usually throw one in my bag, knowing it will work with almost everything else I’ve packed. Worn tucked into wide leg jeans with lug sole boots or with a leather pencil skirt and slingbacks, the final look is effortlessly stylish.
