Raise

Good morning. Unfortunately, this top blurb is a bummer not a banger. Morning Brew Learning has made a decision to shut down, which means Raise is ending as well.

We want to say thanks to all of you for reading, responding, and laughing at our jokes. Also, thanks to our eagle-eyed copy editor, Dan, for making sure we didn’t mix up affect and effect too many times. And to the Morning Brew Learning team, for being the closest to an unironic work family we could ever get.

This is our last issue, but stay tuned in the coming weeks for other resources to keep leveling up in your career.

How to leave a job

Waving goodbye, also crying Giphy

Like it or not, most of us spend the majority of our waking hours at work. So leaving a job can be as complicated and emotionally fraught as figuring out how to watch TV from your cousin’s best friend’s Netflix account.

How should you approach the split? Here are a few classic FAQs and our hot takes on them.

Should I be honest in my exit interview?

Yes, with conditions. If you’re having a conversation with HR on your way out, be honest about the factors that led to your departure, but choose your words carefully. If you’re too bitter, the interviewer may discount your comments. If you’re too nice, you may miss the opportunity to point out real issues at your co.

Do I continue being friends with my coworkers?

Workplace trauma bonding = lifelong friendships. But you also don’t have to maintain close relationships with everyone you worked with. It’s okay to say your last goodbyes to Annie in Sales and then only see her again from across the produce section at Whole Foods.

Should I send a goodbye email?

If you do, this is the place to be diplomatic. Nothing burns bridges and gets the office abuzz faster than a sassy goodbye email. So for this one, unless you’re comfortable being the talk of the town, follow the kindergarten golden rule: If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.

Good luck and best wishes.—KL

BEYOND THE HEADLINES

How to communicate better at work

Chipotle storefront Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

Burrito season is upon us. Warmer weather, more sunlight, and less of an urge to stay close to your space heater all mean that Chipotle needs to get ready for its biggest season of the year.

  • Last spring, the company said it anticipated hiring 15,000 new employees to keep up with demand.
  • This year, it plans to bring on 19,000 workers, in addition to the 110,000+ employees already on the books.

That’s great news for anyone who wants zero lag time between craving a burrito and walking around with a bowling ball in their stomach—and it’s also great for Gen Zers looking for work. According to Chipotle, almost 75% of its workforce are people under 27. Which makes us wonder, how does that other 25% deal?

Whether you’re in a Gen Z–dominant workplace or all your coworkers watched the finale of M*A*S*H live, you’ll probably spend some portion of your workday communicating across generations. And message formatting changes quite a bit depending on your age bracket.

  • One person’s intention is another one’s misinterpretation, so be careful sussing out tone.

Here’s what to look out for based on generation.

Boomers merely got word of computers in their 20s and 30s, so formality is the name of the game.

  • Give them some grace when you receive an OK or an awkwardly solemn email.

Gen X is hard to pin down on the communication front, so idk what to tell you about them. Let’s move on.

Millennials grew up at the beginning of the internet, meaning they spent their youth typing in chat rooms and posting cringe takes on Tumblr.

  • Expect nonsensical capitalization, GIF reactions, and the emoji.

Gen Z is the first true digitally native generation, so they lean heavily on informal language in the workplace.

  • They have phrases that none of us can pull off, so please don’t try.

And remember, just because someone Slacked you with full punctuation does not mean they’re mad at you. (Unless they were born after 1990, in which case they're definitely pissed.)
