The New York Times - I'll never see a sweater the same way

Lately, the girlies over in my corner of TikTok have been seemingly bewitched by wearing a white T-shirt under a sweater. The idea: Having a white tee peek out just so at the neckline completely elevates any look.

Why does this work? I have no clue. But it does. A sweater on its own, in my eyes, is now rendered completely boring. However, with a tantalizing tee? I suddenly look … amazing.

Senior editor Jennifer Hunter, far more a fashion expert than I, finds calling it a “trend” baffling, “because … duh.” But she agrees it’s classically flattering. “I think it works because it provides a little contrast between the color of your skin and the color of the sweater. Like how framed pictures have a mat.”
