Over the weekend, the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team achieved an historic 1-0 victory over Brazil in front of a roaring crowd of 31,528 fans in San Diego in the inaugural Concacaf W Gold Cup.

The coach at the helm of this triumph was Emma Hayes, the 10th full-time head coach in U.S. Women's National Team history, who officially took charge just months prior.

Hayes was the beacon of change brought in after the team's performance at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup fell short of expectations.

In an exclusive interview with The Coaches' Voice, Hayes shared insights into her coaching philosophy, emphasizing the importance of a no-excuse culture. Reflecting on her time at Chelsea, she explained how she instilled a sense of responsibility in every player and coach to honestly evaluate their performance without allowing excuses to creep in.

"At Chelsea, we've created a no-excuse culture," Hayes said. "After every game, we have to get our mirrors out and ask ourselves, 'What could we have done better?' We have to own that. We have to put ourselves in a position where, if we do everything we're supposed to do as a staff, the players are then in a position to perform."

Hayes stressed the significance of accountability, ensuring that both players and coaching staff take responsibility for their actions. By fostering an environment of self-reflection and continuous improvement, she aimed to eliminate the tendency to blame others when things don't go as planned.

"We don't always perform, but at least we can't turn around and say, 'Yeah, but it was your fault.' That, for me, has become one of the most powerful lessons I've learned from my coaching career," Hayes said.
