The Story

Former President Trump is clarifying his stance on abortion.

What did he say?

In a video yesterday, Trump said abortion restrictions should be left up to the states and declined to support a national limit on the procedure. His position comes weeks after suggesting he’d be open to a federal ban on abortions at around 15 weeks of pregnancy — something anti-abortion rights groups have called on Trump to endorse. As he campaigns to win back the White House, Trump has been trying to strike a balance between keeping his base happy and trying to sway swing voters. The former president's attempts to navigate his stance on abortion is shining a spotlight on the Republican Party's continued struggle to present a united vision on the contentious issue.

Tell me more.

As president, Trump appointed the three conservative Supreme Court justices who ultimately helped overturn Roe v. Wade. Trump took credit for doing so in his statement. Still, the high court's ruling opened up a Pandora’s box: Texas’s abortion ban faced lawsuits, Alabama’s IVF ruling caused confusion, and one woman has even been charged with murder. As these issues play out in the headlines and courts, Democrats made gains by making abortion a top issue in the 2022 midterms. But Republicans have struggled as they head into the general election. That's as one survey found that abortion is the top issue for one in eight voters.

After years of trying to overturn Roe v. Wade, Republicans at all levels — including Trump — are struggling to navigate the political fallout as they court swing voters and try to appease their base. It could cost some of them their seats in November.

And Also...This

What could rollback student loans…

President Biden’s new plan. Yesterday, he announced a student debt relief plan that could help more than 30 million borrowers. The White House said it would clear all student loans for over 4 million people, eliminate accrued interest for 23 million borrowers, and forgive $5,000 or more for 10 million others. Biden said his new proposal — a scaled back version of his 2020 campaign promise — would help the economy by giving people more buying power. Critics say student loan forgiveness is unfair to taxpayers who didn't take out the loans and reportedly warn it could cause universities to jack up tuition costs. The plan still needs to be finalized and is likely to face legal challenges that could take months to resolve.

What gave its take on gender theory…

The Vatican. Yesterday, the Catholic Church rejected gender-affirming surgery and the idea that one’s gender can be changed. The Vatican laid out its stance in the “Infinite Dignity” doctrine, which has been five years in the making and outlines what the Church sees as threats to humanity. It received Pope Francis’ approval. Advocates for LGBTQIA+ Catholics criticized the Vatican’s opinion as outdated and warned it could lead to anti-trans violence. The document comes months after the pope affirmed that transgender people can be baptized and serve as godparents and supported blessings for same-sex couples.

Who won’t be spending time behind bars…

Jonathan Majors. Yesterday, a New York judge sentenced the former Marvel actor to a mandatory 52-week in-person domestic violence program for assaulting and harassing his former girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. Majors could face jail time if he doesn’t comply. During the sentencing, Jabbari said “he’s not sorry. He has not accepted responsibility, and he will do this again.”
