My Top 3 is a weekly post where I count down three things I love in a random category. This week, we’re looking at my top three photography techniques.

I consider myself to be an above average photographer. (Although my brother is better and deserves all his accolades.) Between my job, media studies education, and interest in photography, I’ve spent a lot of time learning about and taking pictures. I often look at a scene and think about how to compose it for an image. When I see pictures that seem a little “off,” my brain assesses what I would change. I often find myself visualizing things through a lens.

While my brain is always photo ready, you don’t have to do a lot to improve your pictures. (I even gave a webinar on this topic for a bunch of outreach librarians.) Making some minor changes to how you take a picture can immediately improve your composition. The tweaks may be small but once you master the basics, you’ll see quite the difference in your images. Plus, practicing by taking lots of pictures is just plain fun.
