Flow State - Joe Henderson
Welcome back to Flow State. We share interesting instrumental music every weekday. The paid tier gets you the daily Spotify playlist, unlocks the Tuesday mix, and keeps us going. You can upgrade to paid here. Good morning. Today we’re listening to Joe Henderson, an American tenor sax player from Ohio. He shined in his high school jazz band, studied at Wayne State University alongside Yusef Lateef, played in the Army band at Fort Benning, and arrived in New York City in 1962.¹ He quickly joined Blue Note, playing in sessions with McCoy Tyner and Lee Morgan, and leading a band for the first time on 1963’s Page One.² We’re playing that record along with another 1967’s Power to the People, which was recently reissued. Power to the People was part of a string of records reflecting Henderson’s awakened social consciousness, and it features Herbie Hancock on keys and Ron Carter on bass. Power to the People - Joe Henderson (40m, no vocals) Page One - Joe Henderson (40m, no vocals) Have a really good Thursday. |
