U.N. Supports Palestine

The United Nations approved a measure 143-9 Friday to grant new “rights and privileges” to Palestine and called on the Security Council to reconsider Palestine’s request to become the 194th member of the United Nations.

The U.S., Israel, Argentina, Czech Republic, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Hungary, and Papua New Guinea voted against the proposal—25 countries abstained.

Palestinian U.N. Ambassador Riyad Mansour spoke before the vote and called support for his country an “investment in peace.” Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan spoke after Mansour and said Palestine hated Jews and is not peace-loving.

The resolution is now before the Security Council, where the U.S. vetoed a proposal to recognize Palestine last month.

Solar Storm Makes Northern Lights Visible

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a rare G4 storm watch Friday after several days of solar activity sent explosions of plasma and magnetic fields toward Earth. See storm images here.

According to NOAA, G4s are the second-strongest form of geomagnetic storms and could disrupt the electric power grid, navigation, radio, communications, and satellite operations. Transmission lines, railroad tracks, and pipelines are also vulnerable to the storm.

The geomagnetic storm could also enhance the aurora borealis, making the Northern Lights visible from northern California to southern Alabama.

Liam and Olivia Are Top Baby Names

Liam and Olivia were again the top baby names in the U.S. for 2023, according to the Social Security Administration’s annual list of most popular names for newborns released Friday.

This is Liam’s seventh time as America’s top name and it joins Noah, Oliver, James, Elijah, Mateo, Theodore, Henry, Lucas, and William as this year’s most popular.

Olivia has topped the girls’ list for the fifth year, after unseating Emma. Other popular girl names are Emma, Charlotte, Amelia, Sophia, Mia, Isabella, Ava, Evelyn, and Luna.

There were 3.58 million babies born in the U.S. in 2023, down from the 3.66 million babies born in 2022.
