5-Bullet Friday — How to Throw an Unforgettable Party, Modifying the Gut to Alleviate Anxiety and Depression, Unreal KO Power, and More
|
|||
Hi All! Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. Feel free to forward along if the spirit moves you. This edition is brought to you by Eight Sleep, my favorite way to cool down for great sleep in the summer. Be sure to see their offer in the P.S. What I’m reading“The Secret To Hosting A Party For The Ages.” This short piece is hilarious and tactical in equal measure. It was originally published in Vogue in 1930 by Elsa Maxwell, whom George Bernard Shaw described as “the eighth wonder of the world.” Hat tip to Sriram Krishnan for mentioning this in his X thread about curating private WhatsApp groups. Miss Maxwell had a way with words: What I’m watchingThe Most Complete Puncher EVER - Naoya Inoue 井上尚弥. Inoue is one of my favorite boxers to watch. His accuracy is lethal, and his bodyweight-to-power ratio defies belief. Exhibit A: his short right hand. What I’m reading“Gut Microbiota in Anxiety and Depression: Unveiling the Relationships and Management Options.” Something must be in the air, as several people have sent me this in the past few months. Thanks to each and every person. Here are a few snippets of many that stuck out to me: Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species were found to be capable of reducing depression to a large extent. The points mentioned above suggest that gut microbiota has a role in developing anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression are gut–brain axis disorders that can be treated with the help of the gut microbiota, which offers a unique approach to modifying neurotransmitter regulation in the brain. [. . .] A greater incidence of depression is substantially linked to a lower protein consumption than recommended. A 10% increase in protein consumption was shown to reduce the incidence of depression considerably in South Korea and in the United States. Several biological explanations have linked the intake of protein and depression. These theories are supported by the fact that tryptophan, an amino acid, is a precursor of serotonin. What I’m listening toMozart: Piano Sonata No. 11 In A, K. 331 - III. Alla Turca. This piece will be familiar to many of you, but it takes on a special flair in this performance by concert violinist Daniel Hope and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. Mozart composed it at the ripe old age of 27. Quote I’m pondering“Be regular and orderly in your life like a bourgeois, so that you may be violent and original in your work.” You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with the latest supercombo podcast episodes (Brené Brown and Edward O. Thorp; Greg McKeown and Diana Chapman), this clip on the 4-7-8 breathing technique from Dr. Andrew Weil, and my video on how to live with a sense of urgency. P.S. Deal of the Week — Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra.Temperature is one of the main causes of poor sleep, and heat is my personal nemesis. I’ve suffered for decades, tossing and turning, throwing blankets off, pulling them back on, and repeating ad nauseam. But a few years ago, I started using the Pod Cover, and it has transformed my sleep. Eight Sleep has just launched their newest generation of the Pod: Pod 4 Ultra. I’m excited to test it out. It cools, it heats, and now it elevates. With the best temperature performance to date, Pod 4 Ultra ensures you and your partner stay cool, even in a heatwave. Plus, it automatically tracks your sleep time, snoring, sleep stages, HRV, and heart rate with high precision (e.g., 99% accuracy). Pod 4 Ultra also introduces an adjustable base that fits between your mattress and your bed frame, which adds custom positions for your best sleeping experience. The base can be added easily to any bed, and this feature can reduce snoring when detected by elevating your head to a better position. |
