Deadline Hollywood - Awards Update: Inside FX’s SHŌGUN

Production Designer Helen Jarvis reconstructed Sengoku era-Japan in the year 1600 in modern Vancouver. From grand palaces to humble fishing villages, Jarvis and her team refabricated a bygone era. Studiously creating every element, from the elegant wall tapestries and shoji doors to ships and tatami mats, Jarvis and her production design team considered each carefully researched period detail.

Hiroyuki Sanada must not sleep. There is no other explanation for the acting legend’s ability to film his many scenes as “Lord Yoshii Toranaga” and then emerge moments later as Producer Hiroyuki Sanada – which could be quite the visual. Producer Sanada was frequently in some variation of his elaborate costuming, watching attentively behind the monitors, giving instruction to cast and crew on action sequences and ensuring period accurate details in all aspects of the production. As a first-time producer, Sanada never had a moment’s rest – and he loved every minute of it!

A bespoke approach was taken in every stitch and fold of SHŌGUN's costuming. Using historical documents and art, the show’s costumers and designers constructed hundreds of original pieces, dressing everyone from the stately Taikō to the village fisherman. Regal kosodes, elegant jinbaori (surcoats), samurai armor and Portuguese Jesuit robes were created to honor the unique styles and rituals of Japanese fashion in the year 1600.

Well pick that perfect spot because…you can! Toranaga’s armor is befitting of the renowned warlord; its grandeur is meant to impress and humble. As an advocate for peace, Toranaga dons his armor only when absolutely necessary. But a lifetime of war has taught him that bloodshed may be on the horizon.
