Austin Kleon - To wonder rather than know

In this week’s newsletter: idleness, wonder, Fiona Apple, and more...

A newsletter from the desk of Austin Kleon

Hey y’all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. Mary Ruefle on why she would rather wonder than know.

  2. What I’m reading: I’m loving Tom Hodgkinson’s How To Be Idle: A Loafer’s Manifesto, which I picked up after Dwight Garner raved about it this week. (We’ve had his “Manifesto of the Idle Parent” on our fridge for years.) Many references to some of my favorite books, like Robert Louis Stevenson’s An Apology for Idlers and Lin Yutang’s The Importance of Living. (See also: Jenny Odell’s How To Do Nothing.)

  3. I said I was done making zines, but since then I’ve made ten more of them! (I got inspired after watching this video about how to make a 14-page zine from a single sheet.) Here’s a zine I made about passing the 40-day mark of quarantine

  4. Ear candy: I’ve been playing Fiona Apple’s truly excellent new album Fetch the Bolt Cutters non-stop. (She inspired this post: “Do what you know how to do.”)

  5. Eye candy: John Martz has relaunched Drawn as a place to showcase animated short films.

  6. Eye cocktail: Stanley Tucci fixes a Negroni. (For more Tucci in this mode, I recommend Big Night and Julie & Julia.)

  7. TV: I watched season five of Better Call Saul, and honestly, I don’t know what to think about it, so I’ll turn to my pal, Alan Jacobs. (Spoilers, duh.)

  8. My book Newspaper Blackout turned 10 years old! Here’s what I’ve learned from a decade in publishing.

  9. A book I thought a lot about this week was Tamara Shopsin’s Arbitrary Stupid Goal, with its message that you’ve gotta have something to look forward to.

  10. On praying, whether you “believe” or not.
Thanks for reading. This newsletter is free, but not cheap. To show your support, forward it to someone who’d like it or buy some of my books.
