I accidentally went viral on Threads and it was great

Hey there 👋

I went viral(ish) on Threads this week. 

I’m still mildly confused by the whole experience. It all started with an innocent thread about a Taylor Swift Eras Tour ticket that (joy of joys!) my sister had going spare. 

Unfortunately, said show is in Amsterdam. And I’m… not. (Hi from Cape Town, South Africa). The show is pretty soon, so flying there is going to cost a small fortune. 

I’ve been loving sharing on Threads lately, and found that it’s a great place to get advice from folks on niche things. So, naturally, I turned to the #Swifties of Threads for guidance on whether or not the show was really worth it. 

And boy, oh boy, did they deliver. They showed up in droves to encourage me to live my best life. (Side note: we need a collective noun for a flock of Swifties. An 'era'? A 'wholesome'?) 

To date, my in-the-moment post has been viewed over 55K times and garnered more than 700 likes and 260 comments. In Threads math (if you know, you know), that’s my 15 minutes of fame. 

It’s one of the most successful social media posts I’ve ever shared, and it took me less than a minute to write. And it’s taught me a couple of things about Threads:

→ Communities are the platform's bread and butter — and tags can help you reach them.

→ Being authentic and vulnerable is what resonates.

→ You can’t beat a good conversation starter when it comes to engagement.

→ Your own replies can have an engagement snowball effect.

Of course, it didn’t do much for my follower count (if the rest of my content had been helpful and relevant to Swifties, I’m sure it would have). But that’s a conversation for another time. 

Needless to say — I’ve booked my flight.

This trend will allow you to poke fun at yourself or your business while still doing some clever promotion! You can use any video and add text that says, “Is somebody gonna match my freak? (insert explanation here).” Use the text in the parentheses to explain what your “freak” is.

Check out this fun example from @saigoneight where they’re promoting their drinks by saying, “Is somebody gonna match my freak? (I’m addicted to buying cute little drinks every day).” The reel features several of their products — a great example of tapping into a trending format while still selling.
