This week in our Retire with Money Facebook group, a member wrote, "I am 68, currently retired and on Medicare and drawing Social Security after reaching full retirement age. I am considering taking up a full-time job with health and other benefits. Can I stop Medicare benefits and sign on the benefits at the new employer? Or should I decline the health benefits at the new employer and continue with Medicare to avoid disruption and avoid problems when I return after a couple of years?"

Some members replied that their employers required them to go on Medicare once they reached age 65. This is a complicated subject, and the poster should definitely consult his new HR department before dropping Medicare. It's possible that the employer coverage will be primary, while Medicare is secondary and picks up costs that the employer plan doesn't. Medicare has a guide to who pays first in various scenarios.
