It’s Monday. When we were first told that Google DeepMind crowdsourced marine biologists to identify fish sounds as a way of measuring the health of coral reefs, we were…confused. Tech Brew’s Patrick Kulp explains why it actually makes good sense.

Google DeepMind is tapping deep learning to learn more about the watery deep.

The search giant’s AI research arm unveiled a pair of projects last month that apply AI to monitoring various aspects of the Earth’s oceans.

One, an AI-powered tool called SurfPerch, aims to better understand coral-reef health through audio signals. It’s trained on thousands of hours of real recordings, helpfully annotated through crowdsourced users who listened to them online and identified fish sounds.

DeepMind also recently announced the release of two AI-derived datasets for researchers that could offer them a fuller picture of human activity at sea, including fishing, shipping, or mining vessels that might not be publicly broadcasting their positions.

The two efforts are the latest examples of how AI is increasingly being used to help size up and predict problems related to the climate crisis. For instance, IBM and NASA rolled out a foundation model trained on wildfire and flood data last year, and Google published a paper on predicting flooding with AI in March.

Welcome to the C-suite

The chief AI officer could soon be taking over the chief transformation officer’s old desk.

A recent survey from consulting firm West Monroe asked 1,000 younger business leaders which C-suite roles they expect to see phased in and out over the next five years. Around 40% said they expect to see more AI chiefs, while 29% said the vague title of chief transformation officer is likely headed for the chopping block.

Chief information/data officer came in second on the list of up-and-coming roles, with 11% of respondents anticipating its rise, while 13% of those surveyed named chief diversity officer as another role likely to be cut. The report’s authors attributed this latter result to DE&I values becoming more embedded organization-wide.

Interestingly, chief digital officers garnered around 9% of responses on both sides, which the authors said could have to do with the varying stages of digital maturity of a given company.

CONNECTIVITY

The urgency of now

A hand pointing a remote control at a TV displaying a shoppable ad for lotion. Amelia Kinsinger

Since its founding in 1986, QVC’s on-air personalities have hawked stainless-steel steak knives and Tupperware with the same cozy-yet-ruthless refrain: act quickly, pick up the phone, and buy now.

If streamers have their way, that’ll soon be as easy as lifting the remote control.

Shoppable ads, which effectively turn television interfaces into shopping carts and let viewers purchase the products they see on screen, have followed in the footsteps of social commerce platforms, bringing the ease of e-commerce to the tube. While the ad format has been of interest for a few years, there were considerable advancements in the format unveiled during this year’s upfronts.

In May, Amazon announced upgrades to shoppable ad formats for Prime Video, including formats like carousel ads and interactive ads that allow users to shop from a pause screen. Warner Bros. Discovery also announced in May that it would bring a “seamless and integrated shopping experience” to Max.

The platforms join Peacock, Disney+, Samsung, LG, and Roku, which have all made strides to bring shopping experiences to TV.

In other words, the QVC of streaming is nigh—because if you’re going to be targeted with an ad for dog food or toilet paper, why not buy it right then and there?
