The New York Times - Go snorkeling this summer
By Haley Jo Lewis For my and my twin brother’s 30th birthday last year, our mom made a longtime dream from the family group chat become a reality: a trip to Hawaii. Upon touchdown, we gawked at the wild chickens and piled into a beige minivan. The drive to the Airbnb would be practically the last time my family would see me for six glorious days. On this supposed family-bonding trip, I proceeded to spend precisely 20 minutes with my human family and the rest of the time with the fish. I snorkeled as if my life depended on it—every limb slathered in reef-safe sunscreen, two-thirds of my face strapped beneath a mask, mouth fastened around a snorkel, feet splayed into bright blue fins. I looked amazing, and I felt even better. Read the guideThe best basic snorkel set→A whole new world was put on display when this simple gear was adorned: brilliant coral, friendly little fish, majestic sea turtles. In the few breaks I took, I’d collapse onto a sand-riddled beach towel and refer to my “What fish am I looking at?” pamphlet. I felt like I was learning a lot. And I was just having plain old fun. But take this advice from me and my rented, slightly leaky mask: Although many waterfront establishments will rent you snorkeling gear, bringing your own ensures it will fit properly—and eliminate any water leakage ruining your otherwise amazing time. And good news for us all, myself included: Wirecutter’s outdoor experts have a brand-new top-pick snorkeling set to recommend. It is with a full heart and slight sunburn that I make the following recommendation to all who are able: Go snorkeling this summer. Abandon your obligations. Say hi to the fishies instead. Although no sunscreen has been proven totally safe for aquatic wildlife, some formulas are friendlier than others. After testing 15 sunscreens, we’ve found a couple options that feel nicer and cost less than the competition. Our 2 favorite reef-safe sunscreens→
Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at senior staff writer Kit Dillon’s recent work day, testing sun shades and shelters with friends (and a very good dog) on the shores of Hawaii. Sometimes, life really is a beach. The best beach umbrella is not actually an umbrella→ Have fun out there. You can reach the Wirecutter Newsletters team at newsletters@wirecutter.com.
