The New York Times - Go snorkeling this summer
By Haley Jo Lewis For my and my twin brother’s 30th birthday last year, our mom made a longtime dream from the family group chat become a reality: a trip to Hawaii. Upon touchdown, we gawked at the wild chickens and piled into a beige minivan. The drive to the Airbnb would be practically the last time my family would see me for six glorious days. On this supposed family-bonding trip, I proceeded to spend precisely 20 minutes with my human family and the rest of the time with the fish. I snorkeled as if my life depended on it—every limb slathered in reef-safe sunscreen, two-thirds of my face strapped beneath a mask, mouth fastened around a snorkel, feet splayed into bright blue fins. I looked amazing, and I felt even better. But take this advice from me and my rented, slightly leaky mask: Although many waterfront establishments will rent you snorkeling gear, bringing your own ensures it will fit properly—and eliminate any water leakage ruining your otherwise amazing time.
