4 Ways To Refresh Your Remote Routine | An Astronaut’s Advice For Coping With Uncertainty | How To Be A Strong Remote Leader

Who knows what day of the week it is? Anyone? If you had to think about that for more than a few seconds, I’d venture to say that you’re not alone. (It’s Tuesday, right?) Working from home for weeks on end, all while social distancing with the same faces, in the same spaces, is enough to make anyone’s days start to blend—but now it’s time to snap out of it. Here are four ways to refresh your remote routine today.

For starters, break up the monotony by giving each week a theme, preferably one that’s good for you, like fitness, sleep or even laughter. It may sound silly, but trading a few so-bad-they’re-good jokes with friends or ditching the nightly news for a belly-laugh comedy can go a long way toward helping you destress and refocus.

And here’s more on everything you need to know about working from home during the coronavirus pandemic.

How Employers Can Embrace Remote Work Beyond Coronavirus

If leaders take the time to observe and learn from their organizations’ experiences with remote work, they can use their findings to implement long-term telecommuting policies that are effective for all parties involved.

When NASA astronaut Christina Koch embarked on a mission to the International Space Station in March 2019, she had no idea when she might return to Earth. While it is, in a sense, part of an astronaut’s job to practice social distancing, there are still a few lessons to be learned from how she coped with the uncertainty of it all.

The No. 1 rule of remote work? Don’t let the workday expand just because there is so much to do. Decide when you’re going to sign off every evening and stick to your plan. And remember: By setting boundaries, you’re not only safeguarding your time—you’re empowering your colleagues to do the same.

Leaders, how are your employees holding up? There may not be a one-size-fits-all approach to remote management, but there are a few steps you can take to ensure you’re supporting your entire team. For starters, make yourself as available as possible by establishing a virtual open-door policy.
