Power BI Weekly Newsletter Issue #267

powered by endjin

Welcome to the 267th edition of Power BI Weekly! We'll start with the July 2024 Feature Summary this week which is pretty light on the feature updates - the main highlight being the DAX Query View updates, which includes Live Connect support and the ability to add/update multiple measures. Over on the Fabric side, we've been given a couple of updates over the last couple of weeks, the most recent being that there is now GitHub integration for source control (Preview) (enabled via the admin portal), and the other relevant announcement being the Semantic Link Updates June 2024, which incorporates the new Semantic Link Labs toolkit (formerly Fabric CAT Tools) to provide even more options of programmatically accessing and modifying elements of your Power BI semantic model. In fact, Gilbert Quevauvilliers has written about this, describing how to Automate updating your Incremental Refresh Policy for your Semantic Model using the toolkit.

There are a handful of great articles in the Report Authoring and Interactivity section this week, with David Johnston discussing the art of not overcomplicating things in his blog It is ok to keep it simple, Erik Svensen has demonstrated an interesting way of utilizing Visual Calculations to Build a bar chart in one visual with multiple measures, and Adam Saxton has described How to seamlessly switch between levels of a hierarchy using Bookmarks.

Finally, for those in the south of the UK, on Thursday I'll be presenting the session Developing a Modern Data Platform in Microsoft Fabric at the Developer South Coast user group in Southampton. We'll be discussing DataOps principles along with Lakehouses and Medallion architectures, while using a real-world use case to drive the demos. I'd love to see you there!
