It’s Prime Day. It’s very hot. Perhaps you have household essentials you have been meaning to replace. Or you and your tight shoulders have been patiently waiting for a massage gun to go on sale. Or maybe you’re just in need of a little treat, because it is mid-July and (again) very hot, and everyone else you know is on a fabulous European vacation. Today is a good day for any and all of those things, but only if you know where to look. We got you.

Below, we, your newsletter editors who are desperately in need of a little treat ourselves, will walk you through the gems our experts have found in the sea of overhyped trash.

Prefer to peruse yourself? Start here, with the best deals under $50. Treats galore!

Small upgrades that make big differences

A tube of sunscreen and towels
Photos: Wirecutter Staff

A roomy car trunk organizer: Self-identified messy person and senior staff writer Elissa Sanci swears by this accordion-style storage container that took her car “from cluttered chaos to systematic symphony.” Get it for $18 here.

This fuzz-busting gadget keeps your clothes looking fresh: This little fabric shaver is so effective at de-pilling, style expert Zoe Vanderweide says, “It feels as if I’ve cheated my way into a brand-new wardrobe.” Get it for $22 here.

Sunscreen that’s a joy to apply: Brittney can’t speak highly enough of this satiny, not-at-all sticky Supergoop sunscreen. Get it for $55 here.

The softest towel we’ve ever tested: These plush towels make us (and our houseguests) feel like we’re in a fancy hotel. Use code WCJULY24 to get them on sale here.

Dreamy (discounted!) wishlist items

A hair dryer, a laptop, a pair of headphones, and a fire pit.
Photos: Wirecutter Staff

A handsome fire pit: We like the classic look of this easy-to-clean smokeless fire pit. Save $70 on it here.

Apple AirPods Max: Although they aren’t our experts’ favorite pair of noise-cancelling headphones, they do sound really good. Haley has them and can attest: They’re a bit heavy, but great if you’re an Apple purist or an aesthetics girlie. Save $75 on a pair here.

A luxe hair dryer: Sofia splurged on an on-sale Dyson Supersonic hair dryer earlier this year and can confirm that it’s as extraordinarily nice to use as our testers say. “Not to be dramatic,” she says, “but for someone who didn’t even own a hair dryer prior to this, the Dyson has kind of changed my life.” We found a refurbished version for nearly 40% off here.

Our top-pick MacBook: Our experts think this MacBook Air is the best MacBook for most people because it has a bright, vibrant screen and powerful processor. Save $150 here.

A printer that doesn’t totally suck: Haley is (gasp) considering becoming the one friend in the group chat that owns a printer. This affordable one we love produces “astonishingly crisp text” and is great for the occasional return label or birthday card. It’s on sale right now here.

Little treats

A candle, a coffee maker, and champagne flutes
Photos: Wirecutter Staff

A retro-chic coffee maker: This Technivorm Moccamaster has a cult following for a reason. It’s certainly not the most high-tech of the drip coffee makers we recommend, but it makes quality coffee and looks very good going it. Save $112 on it here.

Festive jewel-toned Champagne flutes: Sofia loves gifting a set of these celebratory, whimsical Estelle colored glasses (alongside a nice bottle of bubbles) to her newly engaged friends. Today she’s considering gifting them to herself. Why not! Save $19 on them here.

A strange-but-satisfying (and normally quite expensive) candle: The savory-and-salty smell of this pasta water-scented candle fascinated our testers. Grab it on sale here.

One last thing: Skip these viral kitchen things. Here’s what we recommend instead.

You might notice a lot of trendy kitchen products going on sale today. But frankly, most of them aren’t worth your time (or counter space).

Skip: The Ninja Creami. Go with our favorite ice cream maker instead.

Sure, the TikTok-famous ice cream maker makes pretty good ice cream. But not without some major red flags: It’s pricey, it’s hard to clean, and its blades can shred up some of the plastic from its lid and container into the ice cream. Plus, there’s that burning smell. Instead, we recommend our top-pick ice cream maker, which churns out dense, creamy ice cream quickly and conveniently.

Skip: The Our Place Wonder Oven. This air fryer that doubles as a toaster oven is better.

Is the viral Our Place Wonder Oven gorgeous? Yes. But does it make delicious food? Only sometimes. In our tests, it often cooked food too quickly on the outside before the center had a chance to finish cooking, and some of its features were downright gimmicky. If you really want an all-in-one cooking workhorse, we recommend this air fryer toaster oven instead, which can air fry as well as toast bread, bake desserts, and more.

Skip: A super-expensive Dutch oven. This cheap one works just as well.

Our top-pick Dutch oven cooks just as well as more expensive models, for a fraction of the price. Plus, it’s easy to clean and has well-designed handles that make moving it around the kitchen a breeze.
