In Japanese, You Need A Dictionary To Count

Counting in Japanese seems easy initially. One is ichi, two is ni etc. The trouble begins when you apply this knowledge to sentences. You cannot simply say, “I bought two books”; you must qualify it with a counter word — josuushi. Japanese has 500 josuushi with unintuitive rules: hiki, for animals smaller than humans — like cats and dogs — does not apply to rabbits who are instead in the same bucket as birds (2,400 words)
