New Rules Upend Home Buying

New residential real estate rules stemming from a 2023 legal decision went into effect across the nation yesterday.

The policies move away from the traditional 6% commission for realtors drawn from the sale price. Sellers must now decide whether and how much to pay the buyer’s broker.

On the other side, buyers must enter into a contractual agreement with a realtor before home showings, potentially having to pay their agent the agreed-upon commission themselves.

While giving more control to sellers, critics argue the new rules add another layer of complexity to the home-buying process.

Fire Closes Historic Somerset House

A fire at Somerset House in London forced the historic landmark to close Saturday as 125 members of the London Fire Brigade fought to contain the blaze.

No works of art were damaged, and no injuries were reported, in the palace, which now serves as an arts venue.

Somerset House was built in 1547, then demolished and rebuilt in the 1700s. It contains works by Van Gogh, Monet, and Cezanne, among others.

List: Most In-Demand U.S. Destinations

The beach community of Destin, Fla., tops a new ranking of the most in-demand affordable summer destinations in the U.S.

The list is dominated by Southeastern destinations, with Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Gulf Shores, Ala., in the top three, along with Destin. The only West Coast representative is San Diego, at number 10.

The rankings considered searches with check-in dates from June 20th to September 22nd and only destinations with a median price per night of less than $200. See the full top 10 here.
