Today we’re listening to Ahmed Malek, an Algerian composer from Bordj El Kiffan (fka Fort-de-l'eau). Thanks to our reader Charlie for recommending his music (find Charlie’s own music here). Born in 1930, Malek studied composition in Algeria and France, ultimately finding his own sound by fusing traditional North African and Arabic music with the newer genres of jazz and psychedelic rock.¹ He started composing for film in the early ‘70s, scoring almost 20 films over the next couple decades. Select pieces from across those scores were compiled by Habibi Funk Records and released as Musique Originale de Films in 2016. The label followed up with a second volume this past June.
