Minimum Viable Product (MVP): What is it and what’s its purpose? Minimum viable product is a recent term that outlines a phenomenon that has existed long before in product management. It has gone from a fringe concept among startups to a widely adopted idea in all industries, though every company takes a unique approach to MVP development and adoption. A great MVP can serve as a rock-solid foundation for a great company, but only with a proper understanding of an MVP and reasonable expectations. Minimum Viable Product revisited. The straightforward interpretation of MVP is a product that is built to gain feedback rather than to maximize sales. Kent Beck finds it helpful to extend the idea. Here’s his interpretation: “Minimum” is a reminder to invest as little as possible to get the next burning question answered or assumption validated. “Viable” is a reminder to build enough to answer that question. “Product” is a reminder to work from particulars.

Minimum Viable Conference
From humble beginnings to a premier product management conference, INDUSTRY: The Product Conference has come a long way since its inception. Back in 2014, we launched our first local Industry Digital Summit as an MVP right here in Cleveland. It's a testament to the very principles we teach in product management—start small, learn, and iterate.
Our inaugural event featured none other than Bob Moesta, who has since become a mainstay speaker at INDUSTRY. Bob's presence from day one underscores the caliber of insights we've always strived to deliver, even in our earliest days. After all, you can’t forget the V in MVP (viable).
Watching INDUSTRY grow from that initial MVP to the global conference it is today has been incredibly rewarding. It's a real-world example of what happens when you find product-market fit and continuously improve based on feedback. We've expanded our speaker roster, refined our content, and created a community that product managers eagerly anticipate joining each year.
This journey mirrors the path many successful products take. We started with a core value proposition—bringing together product professionals to share knowledge and network—and we've built upon that foundation year after year.
As we reflect on our growth, it's a reminder to all product managers: your MVP doesn't need to be perfect. That early edition of what became INDUSTRY certainly was far from perfect. But it does need to solve a problem and provide value. From there, with dedication and a willingness to evolve, you can build something truly impactful.
