Meet The Two-Woman Team Building A More Flood-Resilient New Orleans

Luisa Abballe and Arien Hall started off as carpenters in New Orleans, but after repeatedly repairing water-damaged homes, they realized their beloved city needed longer-term solutions to flooding. With $500 and a pickup truck, they founded Mastodonte, a stormwater management company that combats the recurring floods that have long plagued New Orleans — especially in underserved areas like the Ninth Ward.

With the support of Propeller, a local business incubator, and JPMorganChase, Abballe and Hall have been able to secure the funding and resources needed to create passive stormwater systems like green infrastructure and rain gardens. These features act as vital water catchers in the city, and they also provide fresh fruits and vegetables to people who live in food deserts.
