Good morning. Today we’re listening to Julia Gjertsen, a Norwegian pianist and composer based in Oslo. We first recommended her music back in 2022, noting the “gentle piano” and “patina of synth” on her recordings. Those sounds were on full display on her 2022 record, Formations, which we’re playing again. They’re also manifest on her new LP from this summer, Shadow Light, whose eleven tracks play evocative arpeggios and ostinatos over space-creating keys and synths. At least three tracks feature guitar and strings by Robert M. Thomas. Gjersten’s music is at home with her fellow contemporary pianists Nils Frahm, Olivia Belli, and Ludovico Einaudi.
