Retire with Money

After winning 22 Grand Slam titles, 38-year-old tennis legend Rafael Nadal announced his retirement last week. And while most people retire then commit to a life of racket sports, Nadal turned the tables after amassing $23.3 million in just the first eight months of 2024.

If you’re reading this, chances are you don’t have the same net worth as one of the greatest tennis players who ever lived. By extension, you presumably won’t be retiring before 40 (personally, I’m already two years behind that pipe dream). But when headlines like this pop up in the news cycle, they serve as a reminder that there’s no one-size-fits-all pathway to retirement. For instance:

  • 20% of retirees are still working in some capacity
  • 11% of people retire before age 60
  • 33% of retirees say they’re not as happy as they were while working

Whether you intend to retire early, work part-time throughout retirement or commit yourself 100% to tennis after retiring, everyone needs a plan, and everyone needs to stick to that plan. Just be mindful when you see articles about millionaires calling it quits before 40 that no two courses are the same.
