Starter Story - worthless

Before I started my own business, I worked at a startup.

When I interviewed for the job, they told me something like:

“we’re not gonna pay you a whole lot but we will give you stock - you could become a millionaire!”

I thought that was so f*ing cool, until today.

When I quit that job (many years ago), I had to write a check to the company to exercise the options (otherwise I would lose them).

Even though I had to borrow some money to write the check, it didn’t matter, one day I would get rich!

(these kinds of things take time)

And years later, that time has come.

The company had an exit. They were acquired!

But… something didn’t look right… It wasn’t an IPO, it was some fancy buyout thing for an “undisclosed amount”. Sketch…

Uh oh. I think I just got rugpulled.

So… I texted one of my old coworkers to see if she knew anything about it. Here’s what she said:

Worthless.

All that money… down the drain.

Look… we all know that like 90% of startups fail, this was kinda expected…

But what about the founders? The board?

Did they profit from the deal?

Probably. More than me, who ended up with $0.

Lesson: You’re never gonna get rich working for a startup, unless you get really lucky.

Instead, focus on building your own shit. There is no guarantee of success, but at least you’ll be in the driver’s seat.
