Hi there,

Mr Ferdinand was one passionate English School teacher.

He was nearing retirement age. And our class would be his last swan song moment, whether we liked it or not.

He saw something in us that we clearly hadn’t seen. And by hook, by crook, he was going to bring it out.

Out of his own pocket, he went and bought all of us, even those at the back of the class, a pocket-sized thesaurus.

No one had ever spent any money on us before.

The sum of my literature intake up until that point was reserved for Thursdays – Shoot Football Magazine.

But buying us that book told us he had belief in us.

“O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done, The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won".

No one said anything, but we stopped messing around. We knuckled down.

He loved words. He got us to love them too.

We never said thank you, even though we now had many different words to say it.

So, thank you, Mr. Ferdinand.
