A cheap multi-cooker that’s surprisingly good

Plus, more things worth the hype

The Recommendation

This 10-in-1 multi-cooker won’t ruin your kitchen’s aesthetic—and it’s only $60

Sure, this Drew Barrymore-endorsed multi-cooker is a looker. But we were skeptical at whether or not it could really deliver on its promise to steam, braise, sauté, and more—especially considering its suspiciously cheap price tag.

Staff writer and kitchen expert Maki Yazawa put it to the test, braising chicken thighs, steaming potatoes, and whipping up shrimp scampi. And it turns out it has more than just pretty privilege: This multi-cooker isn’t perfect, but it’s surprisingly practical at a number of everyday cooking tasks.

More things actually worth the hype

Plus: We regret to inform you that the perpetually sold-out Ninja Slushi is really good

Two photos (and an illustrative orange background): One with a person using the Ninja Slushi machine and another of a milkshake in a glass with whip cream and a cherry on top.

If a nostalgia-inducing, ice-cold drink is what you crave, this at-home frozen beverage maker is a worthwhile splurge—and the perfect gift for the host or hostess in your life. The TikTok-viral Ninja Slushi—a gizmo that makes pro-level frozen slushies—works surprisingly well. In our tests, it whipped up Coke slush, frosé, and pumpkin-spice frappé with ease. Cheers.

Speaking of do-it-all kitchenware: This toaster oven doubles as an air fryer

Our pick for best air fryer toaster oven overall, the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro.
Connie Park/NYT Wirecutter

For a long time, our kitchen experts were pretty sure that air fryer toaster ovens were the worst of both worlds. “It’s really hard to combine the speed and power of an air fryer with the evenness, versatility, and sheer volume of a nice, big toaster oven,” says supervising editor Marilyn Ong. “In other words, we thought that you can’t really have your (evenly baked) cake and an air fryer, too.”

But this air fryer toaster oven nearly proves us wrong. It roasts and bakes just as well as it air fries—turning out cookies, delightfully crispy chicken nuggets, and golden-brown sourdough.
